Paperback - English

The Picture of Dorian Gray, Is a novel written by the Irish author Oscar Wilde. Originally published on June 20, 1890, as a tale in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine, a monthly American literary magazine, Wilde would review the work, make several modifications, and add new chapters for later publication as a novel, his only published work as a novel. The modified version was published by Ward Lock & Co in April 1891. Ward Lock & Co reissued the book in 1891 and again in 1895. Charles Carrington then purchased the rights to the work and edited it in 1901, 1905 and 1908. In 1908 In 1913, 1916 and 1918, the novel is edited by Simkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co., Ltd., with a bibliographical note on the Editions quoted and a warning about the existence of pirated editions that were characterized by the absence of the preface and by the "mutilation of many passages." Basil Hallward is an artist who is greatly impressed by the aesthetic beauty of a young man named Dorian Gray and begins to admire him. Basil paints a portrait of the young man. Chatting in Basil's garden, Dorian meets a friend of Basil and begins to be captivated by the vision of the world of Lord Henry. Exposing a new type of hedonism, Lord Henry states that "the only thing worthwhile in life is beauty, and the satisfaction of the senses." Realizing that one day her beauty will fade, Dorian wishes she was always the age of when she painted him in the Basil painting. While he maintains the same appearance of the painting forever, the figure portrayed ages through him. His pursuit of pleasure leads him to a series of acts of lust; But the portrait serves as a reminder of the effects of his soul, with each sin the figure is disfiguring and aging.
