de Profundis
de Profundis
by Wilde, Oscar , Ross, Robert
Paperback - English

De Profundis is a letter written by Oscar Wilde during his imprisonment in Reading Gaol, addressed to his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas. The letter is a deeply personal reflection on Wilde's life, his relationship with Douglas, and his experiences in prison. In it, Wilde explores themes of suffering, redemption, and the transformative power of art. He also reflects on his own faults and mistakes, and the ways in which they have led him to his current situation. The letter is a powerful testament to Wilde's literary talent and his ability to find meaning and beauty even in the darkest of circumstances. It is a poignant and moving work that offers insight into the mind and heart of one of the greatest writers of the 19th century.1911. Wilde, Irish poet and dramatist whose reputation rests on his comic masterpieces Lady Wintermere's Fan and The Importance of Being Earnest. De Profundis was written from Wilde's prison cell at Reading Gaol to his friend and lover Lord Alfred Douglas. It explodes the conventions of the traditional love letter and offers a scathing indictment of Douglas's behavior, a mournful elegy for Wilde's own lost greatness, and an impassioned plea for reconciliation. At once a bracingly honest account of ruinous attachment and a profound meditation on human suffering.
