De Profundis
by Wilde, Oscar , Ross, Robert
Hardcover - English

De Profundis is a letter written by Oscar Wilde during his imprisonment in Reading Gaol, where he was serving a two-year sentence for homosexuality. The letter is addressed to Wilde's former lover, Lord Alfred Douglas, and serves as a reflection on their relationship and the events that led to Wilde's downfall. The letter is divided into several sections, each of which explores a different aspect of Wilde's life and experiences. Wilde discusses his own character flaws and mistakes, as well as his relationship with Douglas and the ways in which their love affair contributed to his downfall. He also reflects on his artistic career and the importance of art in his life.Throughout the letter, Wilde expresses his deep sorrow and regret for the choices he made that led to his imprisonment. He also discusses his spiritual journey and his belief in the redemptive power of suffering.De Profundis is considered one of Wilde's most powerful and personal works, and is often seen as a testament to his resilience and courage in the face of adversity. It is a moving and thought-provoking exploration of love, art, and the human condition, and remains a significant work of literature to this day.1911. Wilde, Irish poet and dramatist whose reputation rests on his comic masterpieces Lady Wintermere's Fan and The Importance of Being Earnest. De Profundis was written from Wilde's prison cell at Reading Gaol to his friend and lover Lord Alfred Douglas. It explodes the conventions of the traditional love letter and offers a scathing indictment of Douglas's behavior, a mournful elegy for Wilde's own lost greatness, and an impassioned plea for reconciliation. At once a bracingly honest account of ruinous attachment and a profound meditation on human suffering.
