The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth Extracted Textually from the Gospels, Together with a Comparison of His Doctrines with Those of Others
Hardcover - English

The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth is a book that was written by Thomas Jefferson. It is an extract of the teachings of Jesus Christ as recorded in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The book contains a comparison of Jesus' teachings with those of other religious figures, such as Confucius and Socrates. Jefferson's purpose in writing this book was to present a clear and concise version of Jesus' teachings, free from the dogma and theology that had become attached to them over time. He believed that by focusing solely on the words of Jesus, people could gain a better understanding of his message and the moral principles he espoused. The book is divided into 84 sections, each of which covers a different aspect of Jesus' teachings. These include his views on God, morality, the afterlife, and the nature of humanity. Jefferson's writing style is clear and straightforward, making the book accessible to readers of all backgrounds and beliefs. Overall, The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth is an important work of religious scholarship and a valuable resource for anyone interested in understanding the teachings of Jesus Christ.1902. In 1803, while overwhelmed with other business, Mr. Jefferson cut from the evangelists such passages as he believed would best present the ethical teaching of Jesus, and arranged them, on the pages of a blank book, in a certain order of time or subject. He called it The Philosophy of Jesus of Nazareth, extracted from the account of his life and doctrines, as given by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John; being an abridgment of the New Testament for the use of the Indians, unembarrassed with matters of fact or faith beyond the level of their comprehension. Thomas Jefferson was born in Virginia in 1743 into a wealthy and socially prominent family. After attending the College of William and Mary, he went on to study law. At the age of twenty-six, Jefferson began building Monticello. Three years later, in 1772, he married Martha Wayles Skelton. The couple had six children, two of whom survived to adulthood. Considered elequent in his writing, although not as his speech, Jefferson took on much of the writing needed by the Virginia House of Burgesses and the Continental Congress, both of which he was a member.
