The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth Extracted Textually from the Gospels, Together with a Comparison of His Doctrines with Those of Others
Paperback - English

The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth is a book written by Thomas Jefferson that provides a textual extraction of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ from the Gospels. The book includes a comparison of Jesus' doctrines with those of other religious figures. Jefferson's goal was to present a concise and unadulterated account of Jesus' life and teachings, free from the influence of religious dogma and superstition. The book is a reflection of Jefferson's personal beliefs and his interest in the moral teachings of Jesus as a philosopher and moral leader. The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth is a unique and thought-provoking work that offers a fresh perspective on one of the most influential figures in human history.1902. In 1803, while overwhelmed with other business, Mr. Jefferson cut from the evangelists such passages as he believed would best present the ethical teaching of Jesus, and arranged them, on the pages of a blank book, in a certain order of time or subject. He called it The Philosophy of Jesus of Nazareth, extracted from the account of his life and doctrines, as given by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John; being an abridgment of the New Testament for the use of the Indians, unembarrassed with matters of fact or faith beyond the level of their comprehension. Considered elequent in his writing, although not as his speech, Jefferson took on much of the writing needed by the Virginia House of Burgesses and the Continental Congress, both of which he was a member.
