The story starts with a dream sequence whereby our narrator and hero, Malcolm Ross, Barrister, dreams of the lady he has recently fallen in love with at a boating party. That lady is Margaret Trelawney and as he wakes from this dream, a servant is hammering on the door demanding Malcolm come as Margaret is in trouble.

The dreamy trance-like narration continues throughout the ensuing scenes where Margaret's father, a man who is very keen on Egyptology, has been attacked and lies in a coma. This hypnotic narration continues until Trelawney regains consciousness and reveals that he and his lackey, Corbeck finding an elaborate tomb containing an ominous curse and the mummy of Queen Tera.

Now, at this point, you would think that the protagonists in this story would question this curse and the nature of a queen named "Tera." But no, they blithely press on with their insane plan to resurrect her and unleash her into polite Victorian society...
