The Story of the Amulet is about Cyril, Anthea, Robert, and Jane, the same four children who are featured in Five Children and It (the fifth child was their baby brother) and The Phoenix and the Carpet.

One of a series of children's books written in the 1900's by Nesbit, focusing on four siblings and a rather extraordinary creature called a Psammead. During the war, Cyril, Robert, Anthea, and Jane are left in the care of their kindly old nurse while their mother is away recuperating from illness and their father is a war correspondent.

The siblings resolve to make the best of a bad situation, but on their first day exploring the twisted streets of London they happen upon their old friend, the sand-fairy Psammead (a cantankerous creature like a dilapidated monkey with bat ears and snail eyes).

They rescue him from the hands of a pet shop owner, and in return the Psammead tells them a tale of a magic amulet that, when put together, will grant the bearer their hearts' desire. The children resolve to put the pieces of the amulet back together, but in order to do that they must go on an amazing adventure through time itself.

It is funny and adventurous and truly fabulous for reading aloud. For any of you who love a good time travel story, this one is for you

About Author
English author Edith Nesbit's impressive body of work includes poems, plays, novels, and even ghost stories, however, she is best known for her beloved children's adventure stories, published under the name E. Nesbit. Among Nesbit's best-known works are The Story of the Treasure-Seekers, The Railway Children, The Wouldbegoods and Five Children and It. Nesbit's novels departed from the children's literary tradition of fantasy-worlds popularized by Lewis Carroll and Kenneth Grahame, and instead focused on the adventures to be had from real-life experiences.
