The Importance of Being Earnest
The Importance of Being Earnest
Paperback - English

The Importance of Being Earnest is a witty and satirical play written by Oscar Wilde. Set in Victorian England, the play follows the lives of two young men, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, who both lead double lives in order to escape social obligations and responsibilities. Jack pretends to be his own fictitious brother, Ernest, in order to visit his love interest, Gwendolen Fairfax, while Algernon creates a fictitious friend named Bunbury in order to escape from his own social obligations. The play is a commentary on the superficiality and hypocrisy of Victorian society, as well as a critique of the rigid social norms and expectations of the time. It is filled with witty dialogue, clever wordplay, and humorous situations, making it a timeless classic of English literature. The Importance of Being Earnest has been adapted into numerous films, stage productions, and even an opera, and remains one of the most popular and frequently performed plays in the English-speaking world. It has also been praised for its exploration of themes such as identity, love, and the nature of truth, making it a work that continues to resonate with readers and audiences today.LANE.
