Mostellaria or The Haunted House is a play written by the ancient Roman playwright Plautus. The story revolves around the character of Philolaches, a young man who has spent all his father's money on a courtesan named Philematium. When his father unexpectedly returns from a trip, Philolaches enlists the help of his slave Tranio to hide Philematium and her belongings in a nearby haunted house. However, the house is actually owned by a wealthy Athenian named Theopropides, who has been searching for his missing son and is now living in the house. Chaos ensues as Philolaches and Tranio try to keep their secret hidden while dealing with the various characters who come in and out of the haunted house. The play is a classic example of Roman comedy, featuring mistaken identities, clever wordplay, and a happy ending. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
