The Orestia
The Orestia
Hardcover - English

The Orestia is a trilogy of Greek tragedies written by Aeschylus in the 5th century BC. The three plays, Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, and The Eumenides, tell the story of the House of Atreus and the curse that plagues the family. In the first play, Agamemnon, the titular character returns home from the Trojan War and is murdered by his wife, Clytemnestra, as revenge for sacrificing their daughter Iphigenia. The second play, The Libation Bearers, follows Orestes, Agamemnon's son, as he seeks revenge for his father's death by killing his mother and her lover. The final play, The Eumenides, shows Orestes being pursued and tormented by the Furies, goddesses of vengeance, until he is finally acquitted by the god Apollo and the goddess Athena. The Orestia explores themes of justice, revenge, and the consequences of one's actions. It is considered a masterpiece of ancient Greek drama and has had a significant influence on Western literature and culture. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
