Rutherford was professor of Latin at Edinburgh University. He was ordained at Antworth in 1627 and ministered there until he was deposed for nonconfirmity in 1636 and was confined to prison, after his release he was appointed professor of divinity at St. Andrews. In 1643 he went to London as one of the Scottish commissioners to the Westminster Assembly of Divines.
