The fifteen tractates of the Corpus Hermeticum, along with the Perfect Sermon or Asclepius, are the foundation documents of the Hermetic tradition. Written by unknown authors in Egypt sometime before the end of the third century C.E., they were part of a once substantial literature attributed to the mythic figure of Hermes Trismegistus, a Hellenistic fusion of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth.
The treatises we now call the Corpus Hermeticum were collected into a single volume in Byzantine times, and a copy of this volume survived to come into the hands of Lorenzo de Medici's agents in the fifteenth century.
The treatises divide up into several groups. The first (CH I), the Poemandres, is the account of a revelation given to Hermes Trismegistus by the being Poemandres or Man-Shepherd, an expression of the universal Mind. The next eight (CH II-IX), the General Sermons, are short dialogues or lectures discussing various basic points of Hermetic philosophy. There follows the Key (CH X), a summary of the General Sermons, and after this a set of four tractates - Mind unto Hermes, About the Common Mind, The Secret Sermon on the Mountain, and the Letter of Hermes to Asclepius (CH XI-XIV) - touching on the more mystical aspects of Hermeticism. The collection is rounded off by the Definitions of Asclepius unto King Ammon (CH XV), which may be composed of three fragments of longer works.

The Didache was possibly written around 65 - 80 A.D. and is supposed to be what the twelve apostles taught to the Gentiles concerning life and death, church order, fasting, baptism, prayer, etc. There is debate as to its authenticity.
In the Babel of conflicting opinions, it is best to notice first the obvious internal phenomena. The first part of the Teaching (now distinguished as chaps. i.-vi.) sets forth the duty of the Christian; in chaps. vii.-x., xiv., we find a directory for worship; chaps. xi.-xiii., xv., give advice respecting church officers, extraordinary and local, and the reception of Christians; the closing chapter (xvi.) enjoins watchfulness in view of the coming of Christ, which is then described.
The most striking internal phenomena are, however, the correspondences of this document with early Christian writings, from a.d. 125 to the fourth century. With the so-called Epistle to Barnabas, chaps. xviii.-xx., the resemblances are so marked as to demand a critical theory which can account for them.
This book has a way of speaking to people at different stages in their lives. It has this magical quality, the more you read it the more you come to understand the words, Reverend Laurie SueWritten by one of the world's bestselling poets, The Prophet, since it was first published in 1923, has been translated into more than 50 languages.
To speak of the merits of this work seems superfluous. It abounds in noble and sublime thoughts, heroic sentiments of love, praise, and gratitude to God, and is full of the most practical lessons of humility, obedience, poverty, and self-denial; &c. Her explanation of the Lord's Prayer is very admirable. The three first chapters are particularly interesting and valuable, as she there mentions the motives by which she was especially induced to compose the work. The style is everywhere simple and pure, yet always rich in illustrations. The interior life of the Saint is drawn to the very letter, in words which really seem to have been inspired. All the hidden secrets of mental prayer, are communicated to us, in which the soul buries herself, and is consumed with burning transports of love; and though we are unable to understand all that the Saint says on this sublime subject, yet we cannot but rise up from the perusal of her words, better men than we were before, more determined to aim at perfection, and to implore the divine assistance and that of our glorious Saint for so important an object.

The Bible is the most desirable book in all literature. Those who in childhood learn the Story of the Bible are fortunate, for they will never forget it. Wise parents tell the Stories of the Bible to their little children, and both parents and children find them the most fascinating of all stories. No book is so delightful to children as the Bible.
In the hope that this book may be an aid to parents and teachers in imparting Bible truth, and to children in learning it, with an earnest desire to increase the interest in the Sacred Narrative, these pages have been prepared and are sent forth into the world.
This book, printed in large characters for a comfortable reading, has been wonderfully illustrated with beautiful paintings and drawings by W. H Margetson.
The Memoirs of the Conquistador Bernal Diaz del Castillo, Unabridged Edition (Vol.1-2).
The author of this original and charming production, to which he justly gives the title of 'The True History of the Conquest of New Spain, ' was himself one of the Conquistadores; one who not only witnessed the transactions which he relates, but who also performed a glorious part in them.
I, Bernal Diaz del Castillo, regidor of the town of Santiago, in Guatimala, author of this very true and faithful history, have now finished it, in order that it may be published to the world. It treats of the discovery and total conquest of New Spain; and how the great city of Mexico and several other towns were taken, up to the time when peace was concluded with the whole country; also of the founding of many Spanish cities and towns, by which we, as we were in duty bound, extended the dominion of our sovereign.
My purpose was to comply with the desires of the publishers in preparing and presenting an easily readable, enjoyable, and fascinating account of the lost Continent of Lemuria, with all of its past history, effects upon the races of man, and ancient, human incidents of life.(...) I hope, therefore, that this book will make the subject more popular and arouse further interest in the investigation of the hundreds of available sources of information still untouched by those who have spent their lifetime seeking for positive facts. With this hope and with the further desire that what I have written may contribute to a better understanding of the development of the human individual in all of his physical, mental, spiritual, and so-called psychic qualities, I offer this work. Often referred to as Torah, the first five Books of the Hebrew Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy) are the foundation of Judaism.
In this Book, though so very old, is contained more true knowledge of God and Nature, than in all the Books in the World besides, except only Sacred Writ; And they that shall judiciously read it, and rightly understand it, may well be excused from reading many Books; the Authors of which, pretend so much to the knowledge of the Creator, and Creation. If God ever appeared in any man, he appeared in him, as it appears by this Book. That a man who had not the benefit of his Ancestors' knowledge, being as I said before, The first inventor of the Art of Communicating Knowledge to Posterity by writing, should be so high a Divine, and so deep a Philosopher, seems to be a thing more of God than of Man; and therefore it was the opinion of some That he came from Heaven, not born upon Earth. There is contained in this Book, that true Philosophy, without which, it is impossible ever to attain to the height, and exactness of Piety, and Religion.

Machiavelli taught Europe the art of war; it had long been practiced, without being known. Voltaire
The Art of War, one of the few major works of Machiavelli published in his lifetime, is an interesting discussion of how armies should be armed and organized.
Excerpt:
No proceeding is better than that which you have concealed from the enemy until the time you have executed it. To know how to recognize an opportunity in war, and take it, benefits you more than anything else. Nature creates few men brave, industry and training makes many. Discipline in war counts more than fury.
One hundred years ago, in 1913, Miguel de Unamuno published a book called The Tragic Sense of Life. It was considered - in his time - to be a masterpiece, an influential work of early existentialist philosophy. But The Tragic Sense of Life is more (or you might say less) than a work of philosophy. It is a deeply personal account of one man's anguish in the night. (TheSmartSet.com)
Miguel de Unamuno is to-day the greatest literary figure of Spain. Baroja may surpass him in variety of external experience, Azor n in delicate art, Ortega y Gasset in philosophical subtlety, Ayala in intellectual elegance, Valle Incl n in rhythmical grace. Even in vitality he may have to yield the first place to that over-whelming athlete of literature, Blasco Ib ez. But Unamuno is head and shoulders above them all in the highness of his purpose and in the earnestness and loyalty with which, Quixote-like, he has served all through his life his unattainable Dulcinea.
