It was not easy for Eileen, who was categorized as stupid and dumb in school and bullied by her classmates. Yet, when she discovered her inner talents and applied them as a businesswoman, everyone saw she was really Smart on the Inside. Smart on the Inside is Eileen Gold Kushner's personal story of overcoming her learning disabilities. It chronicles her journey from failure in school to success in business. Eileen's story has been captured by Special Education teacher Kathy Young, who has worked hand in hand with Eileen for more than 18 years to help children within their community and around the country. Both Kathy and Eileen say, None of us can do it alone. We all need support and acceptance from others. Smart on the Inside helps parents understand the importance of encouraging children who may learn differently to believe in themselves; motivates teachers to teach students with disabilities the strategies that will help them succeed in school and in the workplace; shows students with learning differences that anything is possible with hard work and perseverance.
The corporate world is filled with men and women who have worked hard to reach upper level management. They're intelligent, skilled, and even charismatic. But only a handful of them will ever reach the pinnacle--and as executive coach Marshall Goldsmith shows in this book, subtle nuances make all the difference. These are small transactional flaws performed by one person against another that, using Goldsmith's straightforward, jargonfree advice, are easy behaviors to change.
EDITORIAL REVIEWS:
From Publishers Weekly Goldsmith, an executive coach to the corporate elite, pinpoints 20 bad habits that stifle already successful careers as well as personal goals like succeeding in marriage or as a parent. Most are common behavioral problems, such as speaking when angry, which even the author is prone to do when dealing with a teenage daughter's belly ring. Though Goldsmith deals with touchy-feely material more typical of a self-help book--such as learning to listen or letting go of the past--his approach to curing self-destructive behavior is much harder-edged. For instance, he does not suggest sensitivity training for those prone to voicing morale-deflating sarcasm. His advice is to stop doing it. To stimulate behavior change, he suggests imposing fines (e.g., $10 for each infraction), asserting that monetary penalties can yield results by lunchtime. While Goldsmith's advice applies to everyone, the highly successful audience he targets may be the least likely to seek out his book without a direct order from someone higher up. As he points out, they are apt to attribute their success to their bad behavior. Still, that may allow the less successful to gain ground by improving their people skills first. From Booklist By now, the CEO as celebrity is old hat. (Just start counting the books from former company heads.) That goes for the executive-recruiter-cum-president-makers. What has yet to be explored--until now--is the celebrity business coach, the individual who helps C-level executives correct flaws, whether invisible or public. A frequent interviewee in major business magazines like Fortune, Goldsmith, with the sage help and advice of his collaborator Reiter, pens a self-help career book, filled with disguised anecdotes and candid dialogue, all soon slated for bestsellerdom. His steps in coaching for success are simple, honest, without artifice: gather feedback from appropriate colleagues and cohorts, determine which behaviors to change (and remember, Goldsmith specifically focuses on behavior, not skills or knowledge), apologize, advertise, listen, thank, follow up, and practice feed-forward. Admittedly, this shrewd organizational psychologist only works with leaders he knows will listen, follow advice, and change--especially considering that he doesn't receive fees until improvements are secure and visible. On the other hand, these are words and processes anyone will benefit from, whether wannabe manager or senior executive. Barbara Jacobs Copyright (c) American Library Association. You need a hysterectomy. That's a recommendation no woman wants to hear-but one that 600,000 contend with each year. Hysterectomy is the second most common operation performed on women in the United States, with one in three women undergoing the procedure in their lifetime. Some women dread the Big Cut (a large incision) and the lengthy recovery, so they put off the procedure, possibly to the detriment of their health. Others have the surgery, never really knowing why it was done, what exactly was removed, or what their surgical choices may have been. BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE THAT WAY.
Advances in technology bring new options for hysterectomies, far beyond the Big Cut of our mother's and grandmother's eras. These choices also open the door for you to become your own advocate. Not Your Mother's Hysterectomy walks you through diagnosis, surgery, and recovery, providing you with the knowledge to partner with your doctor in making the best decisions for your health.
Dr. Lynn Kowalski, an experienced gynecologic oncologist who has performed thousands of hysterectomies for over 15 years, specializes in minimally invasive surgery. She shares her journey of becoming an expert in robotic surgery and the many insights into the patient's perspective she's learned along the way.
Drawing on her wealth of expertise, Dr. Kowalski answers questions that patients most want to ask, such as: What exactly is a hysterectomy? What should I look for in a surgeon? How does a doctor determine if I need a hysterectomy? What types of hysterectomies are available, and which ones might work for me? How is a hysterectomy done? What is the recovery like? What is life like after a hysterectomy?
As a compassionate guide, Dr. Kowalski shares her detailed knowledge, laid out in plain language, along with her thoughtful insights and patient stories, to provide the essential information you need to become an educated and empowered patient.

Based on dozens of intensive interviews with parents, clinical psychologists, teachers, therapists, and more, An Unlikely Trust is the fictional story of Alina, a young girl adopted from Russia. After a lengthy adoption process, Alina's parents are confounded by their daughter's behavior upon arriving in America. They were aware that she did not speak English and expected some developmental delay, but they did not foresee that the tiny four-year-old would hoard her food, deeply mistrust affection from others, and fail to initiate or respond to most social situations. Most concerning, though, are Alina's rages. When she is frightened, overwhelmed, or confused, Alina lashes out with the strength and stamina of a person many times her size, leading to injury, property destruction, and eventually police intervention and hospitalization. Alina's parents know that their daughter needs help--more than they can provide-and work endlessly on her behalf. From seeking a diagnosis to advocating for special education services, from keeping Alina safe to discovering her strengths, her parents become her biggest champions. They know there is hope for Alina--and their family--and will not stop their quest until that hope is realized. This book is part of the ORP Library series of disabilities books.
Growing up in a trailer park and trying to stay out of trouble, fifteen-year-old Travis Tooke had zero plans for the future. Then one night a friend brought over a VHS-taped UFC tournament, and together they watched a slender Royce Gracie dismantle his opponents with something called jiu-jitsu.
With that one fuzzy video, Travis's life found direction.

Along the way, Travis encounters mentors, charlatans, friends, and liars as he struggles to find sure footing in the business world to pursue his love of teaching.

We've all grown up watching fairy tales, hearing fantastical love stories, and feeling the desire to be pursued to the ends of the earth. However, for many of us, our story involves treacherous paths, uncertain futures, and battles against villains both great and small.
In other words, an endless road of searching, wandering, and waiting.
Leanne Rozell isn't a fairy princess who was switched at birth. A wicked stepsister didn't lock her away in an ivory tower. She didn't battle it out with a fire-breathing dragon in order to escape. And yet, through prayer, pursuit, and a whole lot of faith, she is very much living her fairy-tale dream.
We often think of fairy tales in the form of a brave knight on a white horse who carries us away from all danger. But what Leanne has learned is that-whatever your story may be-it has twists and turns that we seldom expect. Our stories aren't just simply about being rescued and whisked away. They're stories of growth, stories of battling darkness, stories about finding our way in this world, and stories about trusting in the One who desires to walk through each and every battle with us. With enough faith to make it rain, He gives us a more beautiful love story than we could have ever imagined.
This is a story about a girl's journey to belief in the power of what if.
What if she recklessly chased after the King, entrusting her heart to Him?
What if she prayed without ceasing, believing that He would bring her the handsome prince?
And what if, in that pursuit, her answer came true?
We come from a Source that is rooted in the stars--but we're planted on the Earth, with all of its loneliness and grief. So, how can we find our way back to that original wellspring? With her teachings that weave together the psychological and spiritual dimensions of life, Annette Hulefeld is a spiritual mentor for the modern age. As her own story reveals, many of us feel a pervasive sense of worthlessness because of separation from our own Divine nature; the split of our human nature from Soul. In a lively, engaging narrative, Hulefeld shows us how a girl who grew up Catholic in a family challenged with poverty, abuse, and mental illness found a mysticism that brings body and Soul together again. Rooted in the Stars is a timely and personal story that will resonate with everyone carving their own path to a modern spirituality.
Millions of Americans suffer from chronic diseases-cancer, diabetes, depression, obesity, mental illness, and many more-and traditional medicine is failing to bring them back to health. Doctors write prescriptions to combat symptoms but, all too often, don't even try to solve the root cause of the condition.
In Just Be Well, Dr. Tom Sult points the way toward a new path. He and a growing number of physicians practice functional medicine, a discipline that treats people, not diseases. Functional medicine doctors ask Why do you have this illness?--not How can we stem the tide of symptoms? They see that each of us is a marvelously interconnected system, and that when we understand what lies at the heart of a condition, we can work our way back to true wellness through changes in our lifestyle, attitude, and relationship with the world around us.
Chapter by chapter, Dr. Sult takes you through the eight key physiological processes of the functional medicine matrix, weaving together accessible information, real-life patient stories, and actionable advice you can use to begin your own journey back to wellness.
Whether you're suffering from a debilitating condition or just don't feel the vibrant health you used to, Dr. Sult's advice will benefit you. The stories he has to share aren't about miracle cures or instant results; they're about how people just like you have joined the functional medicine movement and discovered the power to just be well.
PRAISE FOR JUST BE WELL
If I had a complex, chronic illness, I would want a guide like Dr. Sult. I trust his deep intelligence and intuition, and I love his sense of humor. And Dr. Sult calls it as he sees it. In Just Be Well, Dr. Sult takes what can seem complicated and onerous-articulating the underlying causes of disease and what to do about it-and turns it into an accessible, captivating, and hope-filled read, complete with patient stories and his own personal journey of discovery. This book will provide direction for patients who are spinning their wheels in the dominant medical paradigm. It will also inspire physicians mired in the limitations of the same medical paradigm eager for a more effective approach. Kara N. Fitzgerald, ND, Integrative and Functional Medicine Co-author and editor, Case Studies in Integrative and Functional Medicine Contributing author, Textbook of Functional Medicine Contributing author, Laboratory Evaluations for Integrative and Functional Medicine
This book was so much fun to read It reminded me of the pleasure I experienced when reading Rachel Remen's Kitchen Table Wisdom. Not only did I learn a tremendous amount, but like reading a novel, I enjoyed the experience of story. Tom Sult is a master storyteller. Dr. Sult's book shows us why the medical profession must switch from concern about what a patient has (the diagnosis) to why they have it. In acute illness and injury, the diagnosis and appropriate protocol for treatment is important. In chronic illness, Dr. Sult helps us understand why it is time to say goodbye to the diagnosis. Instead, we must begin to figure out why the person has this problem at this time and how it relates to other problems she or he has. What is the underlying biochemistry? What is this person's past and present environment? What are this person's stressors and mindset? This book is the best explanation of functional medicine that I have ever read, and if we hope to reverse the upward trend of chronic disease in America, this book has the answers. I highly recommend it. Bill Manahan, MD, Past president, American Holistic Medical Association
