Now in Paperback! The Viper stunned Americans by showing that Dodge, whose cars were all front-wheel drive (and mostly powered by four-cylinder engines), could make a raw, brutal, V10-powered car that could run with the best. Team Viper went a step further at Le Mans, proving that an American car could handle turns, too; so well that it won its class, repeatedly, at a fraction of the cost of the cars it beat. This book covers the transition from a concept to a rough and brutal rocket to a world-class supercar, and includes every generation. The story also tells of the rough times when the entire Viper business could have been sold to the highest bidder, and considers alternative paths the 2013-17 Viper might have taken.
This is not just a gushing tribute to the Dodge Viper, the author provides an objective view of the full story, using business, historical, and enthusiast perspectives. The book looks at the business case for each generation, the development stories and their outcomes, and describes some of the issues owners may have to watch out for, particularly in the early models.
This is the story of the most popular pickup truck of all time, the Ford F-150, and its predecessor, the F-100. This book records over forty years in its long life, during which time the Ford pickup has remained true to its origins, a vehicle that, when called upon, can deliver a solid day's work, off road or on, day after day, year after year - each one built 'Ford Tough.' Over the years the Ford pickup has sold in astounding numbers to become part of everyday American life.
Packed with hundreds of mostly colour illustrations, and technical specifications, this book also includes advice on restoring the first F-1 pickup of 1948 and the original F-100 of 1953.
This book focuses on the evolution of the popular 3rd generation Chevrolet 1/2-ton C/K-Series pickup trucks from 1973-1987. Chevrolet's 1/2-ton pickup trucks were competing head-to-head in a highly competitive marketplace with Ford's always-popular F150. At the same time, other truck builders such as Dodge, International Harvester, and Jeep, were constantly applying pressure to increase sales in an attempt to capture more market share at the expense of the leaders.
Following a brief history of Chevrolet's building of the corporation's 1/2-ton pickup trucks, the book takes an extensive look at Chevrolet's 1/2-ton C/K-Series pickup trucks, with emphasis on the all-new model, followed by a year-by-year description of the evolving 1970s models, and the various market demands that often led to the introduction of niche models to broaden market base. Chevrolet reacted to a changing marketplace that included a greater interest in 4WD, while being detoured by fuel shortages, ever-changing fuel economy and pollution regulations, and the constant quest to reduce overall weight. As well as the production models, there are chapters on the restoration and growing interest in the customization of these Chevy C/K models by enthusiasts. The Indian has been the iconic image for American big V-Twins down the years, due in no small measure to the motorcycles designed by Charles B Franklin - the Indian Scout and the Indian Chief.
Charles Franklin was born and raised in Ireland where he quickly became involved in motorcycle racing during the pioneer years. He rapidly established himself as Ireland's first big star of racing and was the first to represent Ireland in international motorcycle competition. In the Isle of Man TT he consistently finished in the top eight, and in 1911 claimed second place, a remarkable achievement in itself.
But it was when he moved to Indian in the USA, where he became the Chief Design Engineer, that his genius really flowed. His designs catapulted Indian back into the forefront of motorcycle design in the 1920s and '30s and his racing engines and motorcycles won much glory for Indian against stiff opposition. Franklin introduced remarkable improvements in sidevalve combustion chamber design that pre-dated the work of Ricardo. He championed an holistic approach that popularised new features such as the semi unit-construction 'powerplant', helical-gear primary drive, double-loop full-cradle frames and a host of other improvements to the early motorcycles. This book not only chronicles his life but also sheds much new light on the history of Indian motorcycles and the often turbulent times of the Indian Motorcycle Company itself.
A much needed book for all Indian fans and all who love the history of the classic American V-Twins.
