Leading in the Unknown: A New Paradigm for Leaders in Intercollegiate Athletics presents a new vision of leadership for practitioners, scholars, and leaders within higher education. This book is situated within the unprecedented confluence of the global Covid-19 pandemic, societal injustice, and severe economic depression for which intercollegiate athletics was not immune. Dr. Brandon E. Martin is uniquely positioned within the landscape of intercollegiate athletics as a former Division I Athlete, Vice Chancellor/Athletics Director at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Respected Scholar, and Co-Chair of the Black Athletic Director Alliance. This work represents the unique collection of experiences that inform Dr. Martin's approach to leadership that acknowledges current cultural realities and the necessity to reimagine how to engage with athletic programs, institutions, and student-athletes.
Traditional leadership strategies and maxims are infused with culturally relevant principles that address current and future challenges facing the world of intercollegiate athletics. In this book, Dr. Martin invites current leadership voices in intercollegiate athletics to illustrate principles of leadership.
The following leadership principles are discussed across the first six chapters:
1) Multidimensional Contexts
2) Cultural Agility
3) Catalytic Leadership
4) Dynamic Flexibility
5) Mindful Leadership
6) Cultural Safety
Each of these chapters end with practical takeaways that provide an initial game plan for leaders seeking immediate guidance on how to approach challenges in their respective institutions. In a final chapter, additional intercollegiate athletics leaders are featured to continue the conversation with leaders facing crises on multiple fronts. This book is designed to give current and future leaders new language, practices, and approaches to leadership that can elevate equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice efforts across all levels of intercollegiate athletics.

Committed to Love is a deeply personal one. It details the many issues and experiences I had to confront and deal with in my twenty-five-year marriage to a bisexual man who succumbed to AIDS. The twenty-four chapters in this book range from his diagnosis on June 19, 1992, with AIDS related pneumonia to his death on August 17, 1994. Every aspect of my relationship with Dr. Jeffrey A. Mintz, both as my best friend of thirty-seven years and my husband of twenty-five is explored in explicit detail. The challenge of a marriage under these circumstances was to say the least, both chaotic yet most rewarding. My thoughts about love evoked images of champagne, roses, and chocolates. Yes, I had a lot of all of them in my marriage, but the reality and truth about my life with him was that the word love for me had always meant commitment, unconditional acceptance, and facing every problem with a solution even if I didn't know what the solution would be.
It is in this particular area that I feel my most powerful impact. To say that my marriage was unconventional and that it was difficult is an understatement. But, I would do it all over again because my journey with Jeff provided me the opportunity to discover my own true definition of love. For in those twenty-five years, I was able to find my core, my strength, my faith, my hope, and my true understanding that I was chosen to love him. I was chosen to stay with him. And I was chosen to be able to watch him become the stranger in my bed due to the horrific devastation that his virus brought. To this day, I remain in my heart, Jeff's wife, friend, caregiver, and devoted partner. My hope is that with this book, others may gather up the strength and fortitude to commit to their marriage vows before God first and then, commit to their marriage. May this book give you the understanding of how remarkably strong you can be and how capable you truly are when Committed to Love.

For decades across America, leaders at all levels are sharing their concerns about the current state of diversity and inclusion. Professionals in the field have diverse backgrounds, managing diversity and inclusion from within human resources, as consultants, as standalone diversity departments/units--in all industries---although this has allowed for advancement in the practice, it has contributed to the perception that the professionals lack an approach to seamlessly and systemically embed diversity and inclusion throughout all industries as a standard of practice. Over the years, diversity leaders have discovered some of today's familiar/ongoing questions about the impact of diversity and inclusion in the workplace that have been asked for decades. How do you define diversity? How do you define inclusion? What is the purpose of diversity and inclusion? How do you advance diversity and inclusion for future state success? The responses to such questions have provided the fuel for debate over the past 50 years as to what should diversity look like. The B.I.G. idea is that you can have the super power to re-capture the true notions from past civil rights leaders and present diversity thought leaders. Today, there is outpouring need for new B.I.G. diverse perspectives and the willingness to stand strong to address those big opportunities. We are now more blended, multicultural, and multiethnic as individuals, as communities, and as a global society. So, the more multicultural and multiethnic we become as organizations, leaders cannot lose the power to be B.I.G. in this work that will lead to diversity and inclusion greatness.

Growing up Back in Da' Day, was a good time for us. We had some good days, fun days, and we had bad days, but we made it through with prayers from all around. I miss the good ole days. They're the days of old that I will always cherish and never forget. I thank God for the days when people truly cared for one another. The days when kids could just be kids and enjoy life. The days when parents still taught their children about love and respect. Respect for yourself and for your elders. I thank God for giving us the opportunity to go to school, learn, and get an education. I thank God for bringing us up in church to learn about who God is and how to lean and depend on Him. If it wasn't for me knowing who God is, I wouldn't be where I am today. I thank God for blessing me with these prayers to share with you and the generations to come. God is so good and He has always provided me with the resources and the time to write. I hope you enjoy what He has given me in this book, Back in Da' Day.
As you read and reflect, I pray that our children and grandchildren will have a chance to live life like we did Back In Da' Day. I pray that everyone that picks up this book of prayers will say, OMG! I remember my mother or father saying those words. There are some hilarious quotes and phrases and some just plain telling the truth.
This is a Bible scripture that stays on my mind that I would like to share with you all, it's If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and forgive their sin and heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14 New King James Version (NKJV)
Let's live life like we were living Back In Da' Day, but living with much less stress and the hope of a glorious future!
The Mighty One has given everyone in Melody Meadow a song. But teeny, tiny turtledove Flutter has forgotten his. Who will help him remember?
The times have changed but many of the struggles are the same when it comes to Americas racial, social, economic job opportunity, education, law enforcement and political issues of the day.
As a black law enforcement professional, I've seen the good and bad side of people living in thriving conditions and left behind communities like Dayton, Ohio. I know the impact policing can make to improve lives or destroy lives in communities, especially communities of color. I developed the desire to become a police officer as a youth growing up in the Jim Crow south where I experienced the negative impacts of bad policing along with bad policies, and common laws, all enabling systemic racism to deny people living in communities of color equal opportunities and equal justice in America.
My journey from Georgia to Dayton, Ohio where I became a dedicated law officer in the Dayton Police Department, an educator and pastor over a 30 plus year career was not an easy one. Like most Blacks who decided to work in law enforcement I had to overcome many obstacles including racial biases, bigotry, unfair policies, and a lack of trust of citizens and the police to achieve many firsts as a low enforcement officer. My strong faith in God, the early teachings of my parents, and a strong desire to help others formed the foundation of success in my career and my life's journey. But it was my determination, education, help from others, and life changing experiences that helped me navigate my career and achieve my goal of helping people who live in all communities within Dayton, Ohio.
I hope my new book, The Reasons For A Successful Career - In Law Enforcement & Life, will provide you with a few insights and key bible passages I've used to overcome life's obstacles and bridge the growing racial, social and law enforcement divides we're experiencing in Dayton and across our nation today.
