This book is an attempt to analyze the historic roles of the black church and the black preacher in light of liberation theology of radical social involvement. The first chapter, The Black Church and the Black Preacher: African Roots, underscores the various ways in which African religious traditions shaped and informed the style and ethos of the black church, and the authority and artistic creativity of the black preacher. Only fleeting attention has been given the black preacher in this regard. Some attention is devoted in this chapter to how the image of Africa, as reflected in the early black church and the black preacher, contributed to a liberation theology that would find a strong intellectual character centuries later. Chapter two covers the different images of the black church and the black preacher during slavery. It is called, Spiritual and Artistic Forms: The Black Church and the Black Preacher During Slavery. Emphasis is placed on how the black church translated its liberation theology into practical reality through its roles as the Old Israel and the All-Comprehending Institution. The Church's involvement in Abolitionists activity, the Underground Railroad, and other movements against slavery and racism is regarded as an early expression of liberation theology. The preacher's significance as a symbol of hope, a leader in the spiritual destiny of the folk, an agent of protest, and a fashioner and exemplar of culture is also interpreted within this context. Chapter three begins with the immediate postbellum period and extends to the present, with a special focus on the implications of black church activism and black preaching for contemporary liberation theology. The argument is that the church and preachers in the slave songs, sermons, tales, and other sources. This chapter is entitled, Beyond Slavery: The Black Church and the Black Preacher Since Slavery. The next chapter discusses black women in the ministry of the black church. It treats this as the most significant challenge confronting the black church with its strong tradition of a male-dominated leadership. The growing assertiveness of black women in the black church, and the extent to which gender issues are currently shaping black theology, is the central thrust of this chapter. It is called, Extending the Tradition: Black Women and Ministry in the Black Church. This fourth chapter underscores the need for African-Americans to rethink the traditions of the black church and the black preacher in light of issues that are currently being raised in the works of Delores Williams, Jacquelyn Grant, Marcia Riggs, and other womanist theologians. The fifth chapter is entitled, Blazing New Paths: Challenges Confronting the Black Church and Its Leadership in the Future. Here the stress is on the need for new and more vital ministries and missions to address drug addiction, Aids, poverty, illiteracy, and other problems that are still negatively affecting the quality of life in the African-American community.

This project is intended to answer two central questions: to what extent do we concern ourselves with the selection of a church in a Christian environment or to remain in a church that we are currently in. The other question is related to the church itself: in view of the first question, will your church be functioning tomorrow? The essential problem is that many families and individuals look for a church by just attending a service or two and make selections without understanding problems that may arise. Making selections too quickly may result is beginning the process again simply because of internal problems not within the view externally.

FOR MANY CHRISTIANS THEOLOGY IS SOMETHING ALIEN, overly intellectual and really not that appealing. Even seminary students have been known to balk at taking a course on theology. Yet theology--most simply, is the knowledge of God-it is really very essential to the life and health of the church. This introduction reflects the heart of Dr. Perry, who cares deeply about ordinary Christians knowing, and understanding what theology is, and how to use the tools this study of theology affords. Understanding that every believer, regardless of education (or lack there-of) is truly a theologian, the study of theology can be encouraging and very satisfying. This book addresses the battle for healthy Christian marriages. The failure of one marriage produces failures throughout the family, with the young people coming from those homes and in the marriages formed by those children. We are unable to estimate the damage done when marriages fail. This is not just happening in the world around us. It is happening in the ranks of ministers, within the families of our congregation and among our own children. We can choose to avoid this crisis, by hiding in our secluded world of stained glass and stately music. Scott Peck in his classic book The Road Less Traveled, stated, avoidance is the beginning of mental illness. 1.He was right. This will drive us crazy Instead, we can choose to join others on the battlefield. Bo Prosser and Charles Qualls have advised us, Let's try to frame the discussion around healthy marriages. A healthy marriage is better than a normal marriage. 2 We will have many allies when we do. These are dedicated physicians, psychiatrists, professional therapists, social workers, school counselors and an army of others who have a role in this battle. There are several battle stations we can fill. We can provide training opportunities for those getting married and for the married, coach those trying to do better, and provide first aid for those wounded in this battle. We in the helping professions must also see ourselves as MASH units, picking up the wounded from the battlefield and giving them a chance for healing. This book is designed to inform ministers who want to enter the battlefield as a soldier. 1. Some who read this may choose to enter the counseling ministry with a sense of calling for long-term service. 2. Some who read this may learn enough to give first aid and remember the physician's code of Heal when you can, do no harm when you cannot. 3. All who come to these pages will be helped in some way to join the battle. Several stations we can fill: Guarding those married and getting married, Coaching for those doing battle, Giving first aid for those getting wounded. While we in the helping vocation of professional counselors see ourselves as the MASH unit, picking up the wounded from behind the front line and giving them first aid and care, we need help. Our best allies are ministers. Some of them are on the battlefields, while many are cloistered in their cathedrals unaware of the battle scene. We intend for this book to be a practical guide for ministers in marriage counseling, presented in everyday language.
