Farmer Pettson sat doing the crossword, with Findus the cat on his knee. Tell me about when I disappeared, said Findus.
You haven't disappeared, said Pettson. You're sitting right here.
Yes, but--when I was little.
Oh then ... But you've heard the story so often before.
But tell it to me anyway!
So here is the story of when Findus was little and disappeared. Findus and Pettson live in a red farmhouse, with a henhouse, workshop, and toolshed set among the forests, fields, and meadows of rural Sweden. Every picture tells a story, with a fascinating, magical world of tiny creatures.
(Children age 4 and up and early years educators)
With the cat in tow, Pettson plodded up the hillside behind the tool shed. Here and there he cut some fir branches and laid them on the sled. When it was full they turned to go back down again. But all of a sudden, Pettson slipped on a stone: the sled flew forward and hit the old man in the back of his knees so that he fell back on the branches. Gathering speed down the slope, the sled hurtled straight into the stone wall and tipped over.
The cat was thrilled and whooped, 'Again!'
But the old man didn't find it quite so amusing. Moaning and groaning, he struggled up out of the snow. 'Oh, oo, ow!' he cried. 'I'm hurt. I can't stand on my foot.'
The cat was dumbfounded. 'You mustn't swear the day before Christmas Eve, ' was all he could think of saying. (from the book)
It is the day before Christmas Eve and there is lots to do but disaster strikes when Pettson sprains his ankle. How can they celebrate Christmas now--with no tree, ham, meatballs or gingerbread? For all their resourcefulness, Findus and Pettson are close to giving up, when suddenly there is a knock on the door...
A wonderful tale of kindness and sharing, about how Christmas can bring out the best in people--and in cats, naturally!
(Ages 3-7)
Why do you have such dangerous sausages lying about in the attic? scolded Findus.
That's a tent, Pettson said. He started to dream how much fun it would be to camp by the lake and grill fish over the fire as the sun set...
That's not exactly how things turn out. But Findus, Pettson, and the hens try camping--in the garden.

I'm in a bad mood and I want to be left alone, says Pettson.
Findus the cat stares at him. He's never seen the old farmer so grumpy. I must cheer him up, he thinks. Somehow. Can't we go fishing? he says. Then you'll feel better.
But Pettson doesn't want to go fishing. It's cold and wet, and he must dig over the potato patch and chop wood.
But Findus knows how to make Pettson smile. Maybe he can get him to play instead of toiling in the soil. After all, Findus is a very unusual cat...

Using the extraordinary power of less, Kim John Payne, one of the world's leading Rudolf Steiner/Waldorf educators, offers novel ways to help children feel calmer, happier, and more secure. He asserts that many of today's child behavior problems come from TMS--Too Much Stuff.
All children are quirky, that's what makes them lovable, who they are. But these cumulative stresses slide those quirks along the behaviour spectrum into disorder-- the dreaded 'Ds.' Simplicity parenting is a way to slide the child back down the spectrum. They go from having a label back to being lovable and quirky.
This is a new and revised UK edition of the #1 US Bestseller, Simplicity Parenting: Using the Extraordinary Power of Less to Raise Calmer, Happier, and More Secure Kids (2009).
