Palestine 1492 is a report back of what I see from 500 years of the struggle for life in words, maps, and images in the seven cardinal directions and in the spiral that is time.
In Maya geography, there is east, west, south, and north, and there is also earth and sky. In the middle there is you, a meeting place between the physical, spiritual, emotional, and mental that together make up the social, a meeting place between earth and sky.
East, the physical, begins this report back by orienting us in a corner of Mother Earth still holding a stubborn insistence on life: Palestine.
West, the spiritual, helps diagnose an illness of a wounded, imbalanced, and dangerous world imposed globally since 1492.
In the South, the emotional, Chiapas nourishes our courage from below in a time of World Wars and global rebellions.
In the North, the mental, we flip the world on its head but not to remain, to help plan our common escape.
Throughout, I share conclusions Palestinians, Zapatistas, Panthers, and jaguars have taught me along this journey: that this world itself is unethical, and that changing it is difficult, even impossible. If after reading you also believe this to be true, may we dismantle this world together and help build a new one from below and in common, together and side by side.
Souls of Queer Black Folk Anthology began as a three-panel discussion during Black History Month on the City College of New York campus from 2014-2017. The book also traces its roots to the first black LGBTQIA course offered in 2013 in the Black Studies program. The title of the course is Black Art in the Age of AIDS. Academics, professional writers, clergy, and undergrad students contribute a robust variety of stories, lived experiences, and histories of black queer people and help regenerate their importance.

We have already been through the horrors of a Third World War. Today we are in the Fourth, and if we are to stop this war, we need to know what we are fighting, or rather, what is fighting us.
To better understand this moment, we turn to theory from below from those who know about war: our Maya elders, the Zapatista Army for National Liberation, the EZLN.
The Maya rebel communities in Chiapas have been not only living under conditions of war for more than 500 years, they have also been theorizing about WWIV since it began with the fall of the Soviet Union and the so-called triump of capital.
The seven communiques in this book are only a small number of the many writings the EZLN offers us on war and struggle, spanning from 1997 when they introduced their theorizations on WWVI, to 2023 in the context of the genocides before us in Palestine, Congo, Sudan, and the intensified violences across many more geographies: Chiapas, Haiti, Rojava, Syria, Artsakh, Iran... a a geography and calendar of war as unbearable as it is endless.
As this exceptional moment unmasks the fallacy of exceptionalism, we are certain of one thing: the world History we have been told is a lie, and we will not allow any more lies.
What we are witnessing is reality, the harshest of all judges, as the Zapatistas put it. It is reality that every day testifies to the fact that we are already in a world war, a global war, a truly total war where the enemy is life, where the enemy is all who stand in the way of capital, where the enemy is us for simply being us.
-*-

SYNOPSIS: Fina is in the middle of an investigation to find out who stole the 5th grade's pizza-the prize for winning a reading competition. But all thoughts of detection go out the window as she, her older sister Gabby, and grandmother Abuelita watch on television as a mob breaks into the Capitol. Is Papa okay? Most of Fina's classmates have parents who work inside that building as well. Their teacher calms their fears and the next day, turns the event into a teaching opportunity, looking back at the bitter presidential election rivalry between Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. The students discuss the importance of winning and losing, whether it's in a baseball game, a reading competition, or an election.
