Channtey Heng was born into a poor, broken family in a small village in Cambodia. She always had to fight barriers and discrimination. When she was two years old she was diagnosed with polio in her right leg and now her eyesight is failing.
This was around the time that her father left them for another woman, shirking his responsibilities to his family. Her mother was very hurt and had to work immensely hard to look after three children with disabilities as a sole parent.
As she grew up, she noticed how often her mother would cry. Her two brothers also had different impairments and they lived in a small house with nothing to eat some days. She overcame her anger and set about changing her family's situation.
Later in life, she was able to embark on a writing career after gaining much life experience. This led to the book you have before you.

I'm called Esther-a Persian name, and yet I'm a Hebrew. Had I been able to do so, one of the questions I would have asked my mother and father when I grew older was, Why did you give me this name? But now, of course, I know why.
The story of the orphaned Jewish girl who saves the Jewish nation from extinction is the stuff of fantasy and legend.
Did such a person exist?
Could an anonymous girl have been selected to be wife of the ancient Persian king of kings?
Esther, soldiers will soon be combing the cities and countryside to look for the most beautiful young virgins. They will take hundreds of young girls for the king's harem. Then the king's eunuchs and servants will spend many months preparing the women for their night with him. His words came faster and faster, wanting to get through this.

'The Thracian Sun' is the first book in the six part series
titled 'The Ottomans'. Orhan I, one of the founders of the
Ottoman State, appoints Suleiman Pasha as the army
general during his reign. The prince came to be called
the Thracian Sun due to his victorious conquests at a
young age and enabling passage into Thracian lands. In
the meanwhile, the fight between and for the Byzantine
throne had weakened the state. Constantinople realized
the magnitude of the approaching danger and attempted
to quash its internal struggles in preparation for attack.
However, as it was surrounded and had no room to
maneuver, it found itself in dire straits. Suleiman
Pasha, who left no Byzantine castle unconquered in
Rumelia, died in an unfortunate hunting accident and
his brother Murad I ascended to the throne. All the
historical characters in this novel are represented in
their individual worlds through Murat Tuncel's words.
He tells the story of the passage of the last great empire
from Anatolia to Thrace and the Balkans. Through his
masterly use of epic language, Tuncel sometimes gives
voice to a mountain, sometimes to the sun, the clouds
and also to the fears and hopes of those both inside and
outside a beleaguered castle.
Upon receiving the news, the feeling that his mansion
had crumbled on top of him overcame Orhan I as he
gasped for breath. He struggled out to the gardens as he
realized that his body couldn't bear the pain he felt
between the four walls of his room. Once outside he let
out such a yell that even Mount Olympus, leaning her
shadow over Bursa, would take two steps back in fear at
the extent of this pain. As soon as she overcame her fear
and saw that this painful scream was none other than
the outcry of a helpless father she approached warily to
console him with her shadow.
Im Jahre 1929 kündigte Gertha von Dieckmann einen Familienroman aus dem Leben des Rothenh fer Hofrats Philipp Wilhelm Sack an, mit dem Titel: Fünfzig Jahre aus eines deutschen Bürger-Geschlechts Saga. Breslau - Glogau - Cleve - Rothenhof - Hausberge. 1763-1813.
Strictly speaking, 'Sweet Chocolate', first part of the trilogy together with 'A Long Strange Trip' and 'Towards the End of the Night', is one of the countless variations of Billy Wilder's 'boy meets girl'.
But it's not that simple - is the beginning the end or the end the beginning? There are time leaps, flashbacks, changes of perspective and even overlaps caused by them. Reality, dreams and prophecies, inner monologue, dialogues and chats. Helpful, puzzling or completely missing chapter headings ... Sounds like a labyrinth and hopeless confusion - but surprisingly it's not at all. The narrative is entertaining and comprehensible. A lightness pervades the short novel, although at the center is a difficult, contradictory, multi-layered, self-centered, failed spirit who, after too long a period of seclusion, attempts to find his place again in the midst of life.
As you read, all the little pieces of the puzzle fall into place. And with parts 2 and 3, which are both sequel and supplement, the big pieces too.
In the spring of 1933, exactions of old age forced William Trenckmann to sell his newspaper to the National Weeklies of Minnesota but he remained its editor in all matters pertaining to Texas. Mr.Trenckmann was regarded as one of the best informed men in Texas on state and national affairs and during his many years in the newspaper business wrote considerably about the history of the state and the nation while in the making. From the date of the founding of his newspaper, he wrote each week a summary of national and state news for the readers of his weekly newspaper. Politically, Mr.Trenckmann was a democrat, not in the partisan interpretation of the word but rather in the light of the tenets of justice, tolerance, freedom of speech and freedom of press, to which ideals he remained loyal throughout life, with a loyalty stimulated by the teachings of his father, a disciple of Kant, who was born in Germany in the time when the teachings of that philosopher on the concept of duty were beginning to spread.
Landing in soft snow caused me to pitch forward violently onto my head and neck, my feet shooting overhead like a scorpion's tail. With the devastating force of the impact, the entire weight of my body went straight to my neck, bending my head so far backward, something had to give.
It buckled.
My neck dislocated and snapped so fast, it opened in the front like a Pez candy-dispensing machine. My spinal cord severed, and I didn't realize I landed feet first-all I felt was the massive uppercut as my face hit the ground. It was like no other crash-I couldn't stop falling. I couldn't bounce back.
I couldn't self-erect, getting back to my feet.
Then, nothing . . .

D stere Geschichten
