Some travelers dig deep, with a sharp appetite for knowledge and minds wide open to what's old and what's new. In Cultured Traveler, the latest in the travel book collaborations between The New York Times and TASCHEN, these adventurers hum to Mozart in Vienna and tap their toes to dance music in Dar es Salaam. They pursue Hamlet in Elsinore, Picasso on the French Riviera, and Le Corbusier in India. They follow in the footsteps of Georgia O'Keeffe, Jackie Kennedy, and even Jesus.
Through 100 stories of their trips around the globe, talented Times travel writers and photographers invite readers to share in their discoveries. Pack your suitcase with curiosity for a trek to see Buddhist cave art in China or an afternoon of kayaking in Germany's intriguing and idyllic Spreewald. Challenge your senses along with your wits tasting maple syrup in Quebec or octopus snacks at a Japanese baseball game, sniffing the flowers in French perfume country, and sipping Cognac in none other than the place called Cognac.
And, as always, sample each writer's unique point of view. Henry Shukman, poet and teacher of Zen, hikes in England on Europe's oldest road amid a landscape he describes as elemental, austere, with a kind of monumental elegance. Jason Wilson, the series editor for The Best American Travel Writing, follows the trail of the Stradivarius in fascinating prose, though he confesses, I do not, in fact, play the violin. The veteran travel writer and author Tony Perrottet, with Sydney's art scene as Exhibit A, sets out to prove that Australia has a lot more to offer than rampant hedonism and cuddly koalas.
The best travel is both fun and a learning experience. With Times-quality journalism and visuals, illuminating historic photos, and tips on what to read and watch for inspiration, Cultured Traveler gets you in the thick of it.
WHY WE TRAVEL is filled with personal stories and anecdotes, quotes that inspire, and reasons to motivate-plus images so lush you can't wait to be there. For years Patricia Schultz has been telling us where to travel, and we love listening. Now, in telling us why to travel, she reveals what makes her such a compelling guide and what makes travel such a richly rewarding experience. There's the time she was on safari in Zambia yet found her most lasting memory in a classroom of five-year-olds. The comedy of mishaps that she and friends endured on a canal trip through southern France--and how it brought them together in an unexpected way. She quotes favorite authors and luminaries on the importance of travel and, in a series of memorable aphorisms, gets to the essence of why to travel. And gives us a few travel hacks, too. Travel is, as the writer Pico Iyer says, the thing that causes us to stay up late, follow impulse, and find ourselves as wide open as when we are in love. Why We Travel is all about rekindling that feeling. Just book a ticket, pack a bag, and dive headlong into an adventure.

Eighty miles south of Savannah lies St. Simons Island, one of the most beloved seaside destinations in Georgia and home to some twenty thousand year-round residents. In Island Time, Jingle Davis and Benjamin Galland offer a fascinating history and stunning visual celebration of this coastal community.
Prehistoric people established some of North America's first permanent settlements on St. Simons, leaving three giant shell rings as evidence of their occupation. People from other diverse cultures also left their mark: Mocama and Guale Indians, Spanish friars, pirates and privateers, British soldiers and settlers, German religious refugees, and aristocratic antebellum planters. Enslaved Africans and their descendants forged the unique Gullah Geechee culture that survives today. Davis provides a comprehensive history of St. Simons, connecting its stories to broader historical moments. Timbers for Old Ironsides were hewn from St. Simons's live oaks during the Revolutionary War. Aaron Burr fled to St. Simons after killing Alexander Hamilton. Susie Baker King Taylor became the first black person to teach openly in a freedmen's school during her stay on the island. Rachel Carson spent time on St. Simons, which she wrote about in The Edge of the Sea. The island became a popular tourist destination in the 1800s, with visitors arriving on ferries until a causeway opened in 1924. Davis describes the challenges faced by the community with modern growth and explains how St. Simons has retained the unique charm and strong sense of community that it is known for today. Featuring more than two hundred contemporary photographs, historical images, and maps, Island Time is an essential book for people interested in the Georgia coast. A Friends Fund Publication.
