This is a railroad lover's book. The steel, steam, and dreams of a century of railroading in New Mexico are captured in 200 photographs and a crisp text. From a bygone era of narrow-gauge lines to today's Amtrak service, this book covers both the short lines and the branches feeding to main lines of major railroad systems.
New Mexico, isolated until 1878 when the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad laid the first span of track in the territory, in just thirty months had over 1,000 miles of rail line. Soon trains of freight and passenger cars, marvel of the industrial age, crisscrossed the territory delivering eastern fashion, settlers, and tourists and hauling away lumber, coal, silver, and cattle.
The great railroad-building era in New Mexico ended with World War I, when eleven common carriers operated 3,000 miles of track. The subsequent history of New Mexico railroads is one of persistent struggle, slow eclipse, and corporate consolidation. But as this volume reminds us, steel rails, roaring engines, and clattering cars will always be a part of New Mexico's heritage.
Could railroads, the oldest form of mechanized mass transportation, be the key to unlocking solutions to some of the greatest challenges of the 21st century? Unique among modes of long-haul transport, rail can be electrified. So, why not power trains with renewable energy? Might a clean, modernized, higher-speed rail network draw freight and passengers off the highways and back onto the tracks? Could electrifying the railroads actually open new transmission corridors and increase the supply and reliability of electricity from wind and solar? If the rest of the world is already electrifying their railroads, why isn't the US?
After three years of inquiry with experts and stakeholders, the Solutionary Rail team addresses these questions and more. The Solutionary Rail vision draws unlikely allies together. It provides common cause to workers, farmers, tribes, urban and rural communities via the tracks and corridors that connect them. Solutionary Rail invites railroads into a win-win partnership with We the People. Solutionary Rail charts a path forward to tackle interlocking economic, environmental, and social problems. Part action plan and part manifesto, this book launches a new people-powered campaign to transform the way we use trains and the corridors they travel through. So, echoing the conductor's call, All aboard

This book details many of the different types of infrastructure that are present in a rail system. It is an overview, and presents a reasonable level of depth to the various engineering systems, such as track and signalling.
The book discusses at length rail tunnels, and their related infrastructure, which includes the tunnel itself, fire systems, water management, and ventilation. The configuration of different rail tunnels is also discussed, and the advantages and disadvantages of each is also discussed.
The book also discusses stations in length as well. The many different aspects of station design are discussed, so as passenger flows through the station. As with tunnels, there are different configurations for stations, which in some cases depend on the tunnel design, should the station be underground. Light rail station design is also discussed.
Loading and structure gauges are discussed, as well as definitions of gauges and centre and end throw. Platform heights, which is related to station design, is also discussed.
The book also discusses the basics of the structure of signalling. An explanation is provided of some very simple signalling, and track sections are explained. Indications and aspects of signals are also explained.
Finally, there is some discussion of infrastructure related to the network design of a rail system, such as stabling yards, and maintenance centres. Signal boxes and control centres are also discussed.
This book presents twenty-one great ideas for small O gauge train layouts, using Lionel's FasTrack and Atlas O's O Gauge Track System. Each layout contains a track diagram, a build-out diagram, a bill of materials, and a wonderful narrative by author Ken Hoganson explaining how to build the layout. All the layouts are easy to build, and are suitable for a novice builder.
