Here's a preview of what this bruce lee book contains...
It is not uncommon for a culture to create intricate mythologies around its combat arts champions, but those celebrity fighters who have produced enough tangible accomplishments to merit such adulation are generally limited to a few in each generation. In the second half of the 20th century, boxer muhammad ali commanded such reverence, and in the martial arts, two stars have primarily reestablished the entire combat genre for the international movie-going population. In terms of raw popularity, chuck norris represents the west.
The content of this book is the culmination of a life long quest for martial arts knowledge and expertise by Grand Master Ed Hartzell (Soke). The founder and creator of the Shin Ju Ryu Kenpo Jujutsu self defense system.
Shin Ju Ryu Kenpo Jujutsu is a comprehensive and well rounded self defense martial art system. The base root of Shin Ju Ryu Kenpo Jujutsu can be traced back historically to both Japanese and Chinese martial arts through the lineage of James Masayoshi Mitose. James Mitose brought his family art, Kosho Shorei-ryu Kenpo to the U.S. (Hawaii) from Japan in 1937. Kosho Shorei-ryu Kenpo can be further traced back to the Shaolin Monks and the Kung Fu arts in China. Kosho Shorei-ryu Kenpo consists of both spiritual arts and martial arts. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, James Mitose renamed the system he was teaching to Kenpo Jiu-Jitsu. This was only the martial art component of Kosho Shorei-ryu Kenpo, due to being in war time. Thus, the lineage is; Grand Master Ed Hartzell received training from Grand Master Nimar Hassan; who received training from Grand Master James Mitose.
Grand Master Ed Hartzell generously shares his accumulated martial arts knowledge and expertise he gathered from decades of training, instruction and study in numerous martial art systems and disciplines. Throughout his martial arts career, Grand Master Ed Hartzell incorporated the best working parts and components from other martial art systems and disciplines, into the base root of the Shin Ju Ryu Kenpo Jujutsu. Namely; Judo, Tae Kwon Do, Shorin-ryu Chinese Kempo, Mudokwan, Wing Chun, Aikido, Chi Ling Pai Ying Jaw Chuan system and many, many others.
Through hard work and life long commitment, Grand Master Ed Hartzell utilized the proven results of empirical analysis, math, science and history, to develop and finely hone the principals, techniques and methods incorporated into Shin Ju Ryu Kenpo Ju-Jutsu self defense system. This approach allowed Shin Ju Ryu Kenpo Ju-Jutsu to evolve and grow into an effective and successful self defense martial art system over time. Thereby, garnering the best that select martial art systems had to offer.
Many notable masters and uncountable students have been trained under the tutelage of Grand Master Ed Hartzell. Notably, Grand Master Jerry Otto, Grand Master Kurt Fretz, Master Mark Jefferson (Shihan), Master Bob Lederach, and myself, Master Richard Brescia Jr., just to name a few.
All levels of martial art practitioners; young, old, beginner or advanced, will benefit from the information in this book on self defense. The reader will be exposed to a diverse wealth of self defense knowledge and experience.
* Increased focus, discipline, confidence, positive attitude, leadership, reaching personal goals, etc., can be realized.
* Aspects of philosophy, physics, geometry, anatomy, historical perspective, meditation, balance, economy of motion, body dynamics, proper breathing, visualization, ki/chi energy development and more are covered.
* Proven and effective self defense training, conditioning, techniques, tactics and methods are addressed. Particularly, punching/striking, kicking/sweeping, throwing, escaping, stances, balance and kata are examined.
When the depth of the subject matter and tools within this book are closely examined, studied, further explored and researched; many more paths to martial arts knowledge and enlightenment will be discovered by the reader.

In the award-winning Breaking Through: The Secrets of Bassai Dai Kata, Master Colin Wee explores applications and concepts extrapolated from Bassai Dai kata. Bassai Dai is one of a group of forms which transcends cultures and styles through traditional martial arts originating from Okinawa to Japan to Korea. Inspired by this kata, Wee's twelve combative applications are compelling and practical as lessons for martial artists who train using fixed set patterns. More than 200 photos clearly illustrate not only hard-style striking but also effective, soft-style principles, traps and takedowns generally overlooked in modern martial arts training such as Karate and Taekwondo. The insights gleaned from Breaking Through encourage readers to explore body structure and mechanics and demonstrate how picture-perfect techniques become combat-oriented defense strategies. Masters of old depended on these principles, strategies and wisdom for their very lives, and transmitted them to their students through kata. As a student of the martial arts for more than four decades, Wee accepts the responsibilities of the originators of Bassai to pass this knowledge to all who would study it with him. Readers need not know Bassai Dai, as Wee's methods can be applied to any form in any style to inspire and enrich patterns training beyond simplistic rote, choreographed routines.

The title of this book is Jeet Kune Do Principles. Principles and concepts that ALL Martial Artists - regardless of style - can use in their daily training. In fact, most of these principles are used everyday by all martial artists around the world, and most like speed and timing, are not unique to the art of Jeet Kune Do. The purpose of this book is to explain some of these principles and share some ideas on how to train for them. Some are principles like the use of distance and broken rhythm in combat, while others are sayings on combat by the founder of JKD Bruce Lee that perfectly illustrate a principle or a fighting idea. To understand the root, you need to understand the principles. The principles of Jeet Kune Do are universal, but unfortunately these principles are no longer stressed as much anymore, because there is too much focus on technique alone, and seeing how many techniques you can add to your toolbox. The purpose of this work is to discuss some of the principles that the art of JKD focuses on, and to give you some examples to put those principles in action. The hope of this book is that you do the same with the main techniques you either are studying or teaching - regardless of your style.

A Spectacular, Timeless Piece of Work!Mikinosuke Kawaishi created a method of Judo intended for Europeans when he settled in France which also become known as 'French Judo' or the 'Kawaishi Method'. Its aim was to make known in its entirety, Japanese Judo from the source, since at the present time in Japan Judo had been obliged to discard quite a number of holds regarded as dangerous.
Standing Judo; the combinations and counter-attacks covers all the core elements of Judo throwing practice by concentrating on standing techniques, unbalancing your opponent and countering techniques.
Explaining combinations as either; an attack repeated in rapid succession, a modified attack, or lastly, a combination on the ground following an imperfect throw and which has not resulted in 'waza ari'. As well as counter-attacks which is the exploitation of your opponent's attacking technique to your own advantage.
With nearly 200 photographs this book is a valuable learning aid for the beginner or advanced student of Judo as well as a historical reference.
This valuable book, which as Mr. Kawaishi points out, is written to aid the further advancement of those who have already reached a certain proficiency in the Art of Judo, is a very worthy addition to his previous, widely read works, My Method of Judo, My Method of Self-Defence, and The Complete Seven Katas of Judo.
A Defense Manual of Commando Ju Jitsu originally published in 1943 was designed to teach Ju Jitsu techniques for self-defense that can be applied under any circumstance.
This unique manual born out of wartime is structured to easily convey multiple techniques (Locks, Breaks, Throws, Chokes, etc.) in a simple and effective manner. Accompanied with multiple photographs and sketches, this manual is an invaluable addition to any beginner or experienced martial artist.
For self-defense in the street to be effective, it must be simple and direct. The examples offered in this manual have been carefully chosen. We have purposely omitted any difficult moves such as fancy kicks to the head, intricate holds and difficult throws that require hours of professional training to master. What you will study here are actually suggestions for defensive action applicable to a wide variety of situations, since no one can accurately predict what an attacker will do. We have given you our honest appraisal of these situations based on years of experience in the streets and as instructors to civilians, police and the military. An important fact is that emergency situations do not allow time to think or remember complex defense measures. Therefore, as a rule of thumb, one should go for the EYES, THROAT AND GROIN. Even an amateur can cause excruciating pain and do very serious damage at these locations. Throughout this book, the use of knees, elbows and open finger attacks prevails. This is because we have found that a novice or untrained man or woman can counter attack more effectively with these moves. If you are a Karate expert, then a single, well-placed punch or kick may dispose of an opponent. But this manual is concerned with the average man or woman who is trying only to survive. Each attack illustrated gives a series of counters to apply. The purpose of this is to stimulate your imagination, and all the techniques are interchangable. You are not expected to remember precisely whether to kick your opponent or gouge his eyes when time is of the essence. In an emergency we recommend you defend with the first thing that comes to mind at any opening. Then follow up until the attacker is completely defeated.
USE COMMON SENSE! Many attacks do not call for drastic action. A simple punch or shove may discourage the attacker, especially if he is an unruly friend or perhaps a drunk neighbor that you have no need to harm. DON'T TAKE ANY CHANCES WITH STRANGERS. We advise you protect yourself no matter how trivial or insignificant the aggressive act might seem. Many serious incidents have resulted from a simple nudge with the shoulder or a minor traffic accident. Always use whatever force is necessary.
To be more effective in blocking, hitting, and kicking, study the section on Karate.
To master the chokes and throws better, study the section on Judo. To learn simple restraining or pressure moves, study the section about police or Aiki-do. Don't expect to escape from a fight totally un-harmed. Prepare yourself mentally to accept pain and still fight back. Even experts get hurt in fights but this must be overcome in order to counterattack and survive.

Known as the 'Kawaishi Method', Mikinosuke Kawaishi created a method of Judo intended for Europeans when he settled in France which also become known as 'French Judo'. Its aim was to make known in its entirety, Japanese Judo from the source, since at the present time in Japan Judo had been obliged to discard quite a number of holds regarded as dangerous.
My Method of Judo covers all Judo techniques including Throws, Immobilizations, Strangulations, Armlocks, Leglocks, and Dislocation techniques. With nearly 300 illustrations this book is a valuable learning aid for the beginner or advanced student of Judo as well as a historical reference.

The practice of Kata Judo, the formal demonstration of throws (Nage-no-kata), demonstration of holds (Katame-no-kata) and demonstration of gentleness
(Ju-no-kata) is an essential part of Judo training. Too much emphasis placed on winning competitions can mean that too little time is spent acquiring the self discipline which is at the heart of Judo. The execution of Kata requires a far greater degree of perfection than Randori, or free practice, and can therefore improve standards, and can also be enjoyed long after a person's competitive days are over. In 1993, Trevor Leggett's classic books on Kata were combined in a single comprehensive volume at the request of the British Judo Association and which for many years was the approved text on Kata. This concise text provides accurate move-by-move explanations. With simplified line drawings showing the essential elements of the moves and photographic sequences which illustrate every stage, this volume is an essential reference work for anyone interested in Judo. The third part of this book covers the practice of Ju-no-kata which was devised by Dr Jigoro Kano, the founder of modern Judo, and the photos in this part of the book are of Dr Kano himself, performing the Ju-no-kata.
