Saxton Pope (1875-1976) was one of a group of archery enthusiasts in the San Francisco Bay Area, including Will Compton and Arthur Young, who might fairly be considered the fathers of modern archery. Pope recounted his and Young's frequent excursions in Hunting with the Bow and Arrow (1923). He and Young conquered the mighty American Grizzly Bear in Yellowstone and, in 1925, ventured to the Dark Continent in search of the African lion. Over five months their trophies included Thompson gazelle, wildebeest, antelope, eland, jackals, hyenas, and lions. The Adventurous Bowmen (originally published in 1926) chronicles this Safari. Saxton Pope died shortly after his return to America. He and Young are immortalized as the namesakes of the preeminent North American archery organization, The Pope and Young Club.

From the Foreword by Don Thomas: Like all of the few 'outdoor' books that truly deserve to endure, A Man Made of Elk is, well...different. That's logical enough, for the same can be said of its author. A former Marine pilot and current backwoods intellectual, idealist, iconoclast, and, yes, hunter, Dave Petersen defies categorization as adroitly as his terrific prose.... I know deer hunters, bear hunters, and sheep hunters, but I don't know anyone else who identifies as completely with one species of game as Dave Petersen identifies with elk. This book's title goes beyond metaphor; the guy is made of elk.
After much encouragement, I wrote this book to document the many lessons learned from my years hunting the elusive Coues. It is for all of you who share this passion for hunting and killing big Coues deer bucks.
In 2002, I took my first Coues buck, and the ride began. This morphed into a couple decades obsession to kill these big mature Coues bucks. I'm an Arizona guy, and these are all Arizona bucks. All of them were taken DIY. Four of them grossed over 120 inches, including the 141-inch Pope and Young gross (143-inch SCI) archery buck from 2016, the still standing Pope and Young velvet nontypical world record. I've included a lot of other bucks in these chapters, as well as the fundamental and unorthodox ways I've hunted and killed them.
If you are reading this, the fire probably already burns within. I hope this stokes it!
This is a book about hunting the elusive Coues Deer, otherwise known as the Great Ghost.
In hunting, the finding and killing of the game is after all but a part of the whole. The
free, self-reliant, adventurous life, with its rugged and stalwart democracy; the wild surroundings, the grand beauty of the scenery, the chance to study the ways and habits of the
woodland creatures all these unite to give to the career of the wilderness hunter its peculiar
charm. --Theodore Roosevelt, The Wilderness Hunter
The Wilderness Hunter (1893), by Theodore Roosevelt, describes hunting of many kinds of game, from blacktail deer to antelope, bighorn sheep, moose, and elk. Roosevelt shows his love for the outdoors in a colorful and vivid manner.
This is a modern-day adventure based on a true story in America's last great wilderness, Alaska. It is a tale about a hunting expedition that quickly goes sideways. Two friends find themselves battling for survival among bear attacks, failing equipment, and deadly weather. These two not only survive but thrive with cool heads, trust in each other, and a positive outlook. This story is a true page-turner that thrusts the reader into the story as if they were side by side in this tale. Try not to get Cari-ed Away!
