Here, in Margaret Jull Costa and Patricio Ferrari's splendid new translations, are the complete poems of Alberto Caeiro, the imaginary heteronym coterie created by Fernando Pessoa, the Portuguese modernist master. Pessoa conceived Caeiro around 1914 and may have named him loosely after his friend, the poet Mário de Sa-Cárrneiro. What followed was a collection of some of Fernando Pessoa's greatest poems, grouped under the titles The Keeper of Sheep, The Shepherd in Love, and Uncollected Poems. This imaginary author was a shepherd who spent most of his life in the countryside, had almost no education, and was ignorant of most literature; yet he (Pessoa) wrote some of the most beautiful and profound poems in Portuguese literature. This work launched into the international spotlight a young and unknown poet whose writings would ignite a generation. Álvaro de Campos is one of the most influential heteronyms created by Portugal's great modernist writer Fernando Pessoa. According to Pessoa, Campos was born in Tavira (Algarve) in 1890 and studied mechanical engineering in Glasgow, although he never managed to complete his degree. In his own day, Campos was celebrated--and slandered--for his vociferous poetry imbued with a Whitman-inspired free verse, his praise of the rise of technology, and his polemical views that appeared in manifestos, interviews, and essays. Here in Margaret Jull Costa and Patricio Ferrari's translations are the complete poems of Campos. This edition is based on the Portuguese Tinta-da-china edition and includes an illuminating introduction about Campos by the Portuguese editors Jerónimo Pizarro and Antonio Cardiello, facsimiles of original manuscripts, and a generous selection of Campos's prose texts.

Miguel Gane, one of the most widely read poets of his generation, reflects on the people who own our hearts and how, through love, we give others the power to hurt us even as they make us whole.

In 1974, Serbian performance artist Marina Abramovic surrounded herself with seventy-two objects, divided into two categories: pleasure and pain. She invited her audience to use them on her body, thereby transforming it into just one more object. Her goal was to observe how humans behaved when faced with defenselessness.

By the end of the performance, it is said Abramovic's very life was in danger. Ultimately, inflicting pain was the easy part. The hardest thing is always love.

To say do what you want with me is an invitation to pain, but also a gesture of blind trust, of submission. Using Abramovic's performance as his reference point, Miguel Gane, one of the best-known poets of his generation, reflects on the people who own our hearts and how, through love, we give others the power to hurt us even as they make us whole.

Rafael Alberti's collection of poems set in vibrant Rome, his home in exile from Spain.

After his long exile in France and Argentina following the Spanish Civil War, Rafael Alberti's final home in exile was Rome, where he wrote Roma: Peligro para caminantes (Rome: Pedestrians Beware). There, Romulus and Remus sneak down to the Tiber to suckle on feral cats, a jack of all trades pisses on the poet's shoes, whistling as he walks away, and in the Campo de' Fiori the poet compares sonnets with the wandering spirit of Giuseppe Gioachino Belli, all in the shadow of the glory of Rome's imperial ruins.

It is, however, a book where the Andalusia that is seen is hardly expressed, but where the one that is not seen is trembling: an anti-picturesque, anti-folkloric, anti-flamenco book..., where the figures serve millenary backgrounds and where there is nothing more than a large and dark character like a summer sky... the Penalty.
