From the time he began recording with the Velvet Underground in the 1960s until his death in 2013, Lou Reed released nearly 50 original albums. In Sweet, Wild and Vicious, Jim Higgins delves into each one, with descriptions, details, analysis and appraisals that will amplify and expand fans' understanding and appreciation of them.
This listener's guide is personal as well as definitive, a thoughtful consideration of Reed's entire career from the perspective of a devoted follower able to separate the highs from the lows.
Greg Kot, Sound Opinions co-host:
I didn't think we needed another book on Lou Reed or the Velvet Underground until I read Sweet, Wild and Vicious. A voracious listener and gifted writer, Jim Higgins contextualizes Reed's life and aesthetic in a way that illuminates the world he created between the headphones. His recordings - by turns brilliant, confounding and daring - finally get the book they deserve. It's nothing less than an essential addition to our understanding and appreciation of Reed/Velvets.
Victor DeLorenzo, founding member of the Violent Femmes:
I have been aware of and absolutely mystified by the glorious VU since I was 16 years old. Jim Higgins has written a book that celebrates this magical group of musicians and then proceeds to follow the many enigmas that is Lou Reed. (I had the pleasure to meet them all and record and play live with Moe and Sterling.) Jim presents a very good take on Lou, and I'm sure the audience that adores Mr. Reed will enjoy the way Jim listens and responds to the recordings.
Elizabeth Nelson, singer-songwriter, the Paranoid Style:
Replete with gimlet-eyed observations and a true fan's infectious enthusiasm, Jim Higgins' survey of Lou Reed's solo years is simultaneously a wild ride and a scholarly account of a complex and legendary canon. Two hundred and fifty-five pages of street hassles, dance crazes, and brilliant new sensations. Bold and essential.
Tom Moon (author of the NY Times bestseller 1000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die):
As fits his subject, Higgins engages at street level, weaving carefully researched details, sharp original descriptions of the music and reactions from artists (and tastemakers) into a thorough exploration of the sonic realms this icon visited - and then owned.
Musician Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate, the Baseball Project, solo):
Jim Higgins does a heroic job of navigating the choppy and complicated waters of Lou Reed's recorded history, putting his spin on the good, the bad and the ugly contained in the grooves. Higgins takes no prisoners-you may not always agree with his take but he always makes a good, informative, thoughtful consideration and this book will make you want to go back and listen to the records one more time with fresh ears.
Tammy Faye Starlite (singer, performer, Nico channeler):
Jim Higgins gives such precise details about lyrics I love - Heroin, Street Hassle, Good Evening Mr. Waldheim - and while underlining the contradictions and complexities of Lou Reed's brilliance and persona(e), he accepts and embraces the totality of the artist with profound awe. I got chills reading about songs that, through Higgins's words. A must-have for Lou Reed fans.
The Dream Bowl was a ballroom in Northern California that, when I was a kid, fascinated me each time I saw it in the 1950s on trips from Napa to Vallejo. Looking into its history, I was astonished at the parade of major musical acts that performed there from its opening in 1941 to its closure in 1969. It had Swing, Country & Western, and Rock bands during each of those eras. Near its end, I saw Santana, and the Grateful Dead at the Dream Bowl; both highly memorable experiences.
There was no shortage of examples bridging these various genres and musical periods as the music developed and styles mixed over time. The Dream Bowl - Where Goodman, Ellington, and the Grateful Dead Convene, is a celebration of music generally, and specifically, a deep-dive, with great respect and love, into the stories that happened within this incredible house of music.
As the subtitle suggests, there are profiles on those in the subtitle, as there are for John Coltrane, Johnny Cash, Sonny Rollins, Bob Wills, and more. Helping to bring the story to life, I was fortunate to be able to talk with people who actually performed there, and was fortunate also, to have attended many concerts at which the great musicians talked about in the book performed. Over a decade in the making, it truly was a labor of love. I hope you'll dive in with enjoyment yourself.

Beginning in 1963, a family from Utah started turning out records and within a decade became one of the top selling musical acts in history.
From old-time standards to pop through country and onto Broadway, this family has tackled it all. Follow along on their musical gold and platinum journey through albums, singles, and promotional material used to propel the family to heights only wished for by more established artists.
Comes with recording dates, foreign releases and unreleased material. Even a bonus TV section featuring The Donny & Marie Show, The Osmond Family Show, and the Osmond Brothers cartoons
From the introduction:
With as vast a career, spanning many, many decades it would be impossible to present every single 45 and LP release in the careers of a family with at least 5 different performing groups who recorded in eight languages: Swedish, Japanese, Samoan, German, Spanish, French, Latin and of course English. They've also had five recording acts on the charts at the same time with the Osmond Brothers, Donny & Marie, and Donny, Marie, and Jimmy as individual artists. But I have attempted to locate and present a vast majority of the work by this famous musical family who has sold more than 100+ million albums world wide.
Barry Alan Pincus, better known as Barry Manilow, was born on June 17, 1943 and raised in Brooklyn, New York. From an early age, music was important to Barry. After high school, he studied at New York College of Music and Juilliard. Around 1964 and continuing on for years, Barry wrote jingles for various companies such as Band-Aid, Pepsi, McDonalds, and others. In 1969, Barry signed with Bell Records and recorded several singles as Featherbed. None of the releases caused any real chart action. On July 7, 1973, Bell Records released the album Barry Manilow (Bell-1129) which was the start of a long and productive career that is still going strong today!
Daniel Selby has research and compiled the most up to date discography ever published on this remarkable music icon. Complete with foreign releases and rare photographs. Also includes TV appearances and a decade of tour dates! Career spanning!
