The Spanish Golden Age, a cultural narrative that has developed and over four centuries, remains a key element of how Spaniards articulate cultural identities, both within Spain and to the outside world. The Currency of Cultural Patrimony examines the development of this narrative by artists, intellectuals, historians, academics, and institutions. By defining the Spanish Golden Age as a diachronic problem, it examines several of Spain's most canonical golden-age literary narratives (including Don Quixote, Fuenteovejuna, and Las mocedades del Cid) as texts whose institutionalization, mediation, and commercialization over the course of four hundred years inform their meaning both for contemporary Spaniards and for the field of Hispanic Studies around the world. Spain's persistent deployment of this cultural patrimony as the canonical epicentre of a national literary tradition has stimulated diverse and often contradictory interpretations, the cumulative effect of which informs their reception by each new generation of Spaniards. This book's analysis of how this patrimony is interpreted according to both tradition and current circumstances illuminates new angles from which scholars can approach some of Hispanism's most persistent and vexing questions, including the growing divide between popular and academic understandings of the Spanish nation's classics.
Ramón Gómez de la Serna (1888-1963) was one of Spain's most gifted avant-gardists. Oftentimes remembered as the inventor of the greguería--a type of witty and humorous epigram that recasts the commonplace and absurdities of everyday reality--he was a prolific writer and published dozens of novels, essays, short stories, articles, editorials, and biographies throughout his life. Two of his major works--the autobiography Morbidities (1908), and the manifesto The Concept of the New Literature (1909)--belong to his earliest period of experimentation. These two early works are of singular importance not only in understanding his development as an avant-gardist, but also in analyzing Spanish literature within the broader framework of European avant-garde culture. With prescient clarity, they highlight many of the aesthetic notions that would revolutionize experimental literature throughout the modernist period. Celestina is a late 15th century work by Fernando de Rojas that is considered one of the greatest works of Spanish literature, one which marks the transition from the late medieval period and the beginning of the literary renaissance in Spain. The story is concerned with the love affair of Calisto and Melibea. Upon meeting Melibea, Calisto falls madly in love with her. However at first she rejects his advances. Calisto's servant Sempronio introduces him to Celestina, a local procuress at a brothel, whom he says can help him win the love of Melibea. Unfortunately Sempronio and Celestina are primarily interested in just getting as much money out of Calisto as possible; a deception which will have tragic consequences for the two would be lovers. Described as a Spanish Romeo and Juliet, Rojas' Celestina is a highly regarded work of Spanish literature that would be deeply influential on the development of the picaresque novel as well as the work of future Spanish literary figures like Miguel de Cervantes. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and follows the translation of James Mabbe with an introduction by James Fitzmaurice-Kelly.

Sor Juana's Respuesta a sor Filotea (1691) is one of her most widely read works and an established text in the history of women's writing. Less frequently studied is the epistolary exchange to which it responds, particularly Juana's Crisis sobre un sermón (or Carta atenagórica, 1690), her response to a sermon by the Portuguese Jesuit Antonio Vieira on Christ's greatest fineza, or demonstration of love. In the Crisis, Sor Juana puts into practice what she would later argue in the Respuesta: that women could, and should, engage in theological study, and that a woman's well-reasoned argument would defeat any man's ill-founded and unorthodox thought. This is the first annotated, critical edition and English translation of the complete published exchange between Sor Juana and Manuel Fernández de Santa Cruz, with a comprehensive introduction, commented textual variants, and extensive textual notes. The introduction explores how the Crisis can be read in relation to Juana's other works, including her love poetry, her eucharistic drama El mártir del Sacramento, and Primero sueño. By analysing its central themes, this study argues that the Crisis is key to Juana's defence of women's learning, while also shedding light on her views on gender, theological enquiry, and the dynamics of love, both religious and secular.
