Women Pioneers of the Arts & Crafts Movement is a celebration of the work and ambition of the women who were at the heart of the most influential art and design movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It shines a light on the vital contribution of figures such as May Morris, Gertrude Jekyll, Annie Garnett, and many others, and describes the Arts and Crafts Movement from the perspective of these women who worked against the odds as artists, makers, teachers, authors, and entrepreneurs.
Women of the era took part in, and often led, the founding of exhibitions, societies, art schools, and small craft industries. Some were activists and social disruptors while using their skills and talents to make a living. This book highlights the versatility and range of these talented women, who worked across a host of disciplines, including textile design, embroidery, bookbinding, illustration, painting, enameling, stained glass, metalwork, furniture design, and architecture. It is richly illustrated with a wide array of their work, much of it previously unpublished. Featuring objects from the V&A's renowned Arts and Crafts collection, the book also includes key pieces from other museums and private collections across the UK.

Defining beauty in art as the result of man's pleasure in his work, the noted English poet, designer, craftsman and pioneer Socialist William Morris (1834-1896) spent most of his life enthusiastically expounding this view through his many attractive designs for interior furnishings.
The present book faithfully reproduces 40 of the most celebrated examples of Morris's work, reprinting in full color all the color plates from The Art of William Morris, published by George Bell & Sons in 1897. Included in this splendid, ready-to-use archive are richly detailed wallpaper designs incorporating marigold, vine, acanthus, apple, wild tulip, daisy and trellis motifs; hand-painted tiles with a rose pattern; chintzes displaying honeysuckle and bird and anemone designs; an acanthus design on printed velveteen; a superb peacock and dragon design on woven wool tapestry; a magnificent Kidderminster carpet with its lily motif.
Originally intended to decorate Victorian homes, these tasteful patterns provide a wealth of source material for modern artists working in advertising, textile, residential or industrial design. Commercial artists and graphic designers will welcome this modestly priced collection of copyright-free designs by one of the most influential artists of the Victorian period.

Anni Albers (1899 - 1994) was one of the most influential textile designers of the 20th century. Born in Berlin, in 1922 she became a student at the Bauhaus in Weimar, where she met her husband, Josef Albers. From 1933 to 1949 Albers taught at Black Mountain College. The fifteen essays gathered here illustrate Anni Albers's concept of design as the pursuit of wholeness -- the coalition of form answering practical needs and form answering aesthetic needs. This beautifully illustrated book addresses the artistic and practical concerns of modern design and considers the ever-changing role of the designer.
Albers's work is in private collections and in those of leading museums both here and abroad. Among them are the Busch-Reisinger Museum at Harvard University, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Museum Neue Sammlung in Munich, the Bauhaus Archiv in Berlin, and the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York. Daily life in India is enriched by a colorful profusion of handmade goods, crafted with simple tools by artisans rooted in local traditions. From the richly embroidered gabba rugs of Kashmir to the polished metal mirrors of Kerala, and from the turned-wood vases of Gujarat to the coiled-cane hats of Arunachal Pradesh, the range of Indian handicrafts is as rich and varied as the country's culture and geography.
Handmade in India is the first book to explore the entire spectrum of Indian crafts, state by state and district by district. The product of extensive fieldwork, it covers all aspects of India's regional traditions: their historical, social, and cultural context; design and production processes; and markets old and new. Thousands of color photographs show the artisans at work, their tools, and their finished products. The broad geographic scope allows the reader to appreciate not only the astonishing diversity of Indian crafts, but also the variations (sometimes subtle, sometimes surprising) in the same craft as practiced in different regions.
This beautifully illustrated volume is an indispensable reference for product and textile designers, artists, architects, interior designers, development professionals, and collectors alike.
