CoquĂ-Kokee es la historia de dos coquĂes que regresan a Puerto Rico luego de haber vivido toda su vida en una isla de Hawaii. El coquĂ es una pequeña rana endĂ©mica de Puerto Rico. Los puertorriqeños sentimos un amor especial por el coquĂ, y es uno de nuestro sĂmbolos más reconocibles. El puertorriqueño que vive fuera de la isla siente mucha nostalgia cuando llama a familiares o amistades y de momento se escucha el canto del coquĂ a travĂ©s del telĂ©fono. Como puertorriqueños, nuestro oĂdo está acostumbrado a la melodĂa del canto del coquĂ y al escucharlo nos sentimos que estamos en el terruño. Siempre hemos pensado que el coquĂ, al ser una especie endĂ©mica de la isla, nunca se pudiera aclimatar fuera de Puerto Rico. Pero nos equivocamos. Resulta que en el archipiĂ©lago Hawaiino hay una poblacion abundante de coquĂes. Y cĂłmo sucediĂł eso? Dicen los expertos que en el 1988, un barco proveniente de Puerto Rico con material vegetativo, llegĂł a Hawaii y que de esa manera la pequeña rana pudo llegar hasta esas islas en el ocĂ©ano PacĂfico. AllĂ en Hawaii, el coquĂ encontrĂł todas las condiciones ideales para reproducirse. Pero no fue bien recibido por gran parte de la poblaciĂłn de Hawaii. Por tal razĂłn, en Hawaii, el coquĂ es visto como una especie invasora, y su canto resulta molestoso para muchos en Hawaii. Inclusive, el Departamento de Recursos Naturales de Hawaii tiene programas de control de plagas en donde fumigan las áreas en donde se escuchan los coquĂes. Hay que señalar que el canto del coquĂ no le molesta a todos los hawaianos, en especial a muchos descendientes de puertorriqueños que emigraron a Hawaii a principios de los 1900 para los cuales el canto del coquĂ resulta en una melodĂa placentera. Y por quĂ© el libro se titula CoquĂ-Kokee? El tĂtulo responde a la onomatopeya del canto del coquĂ.
