From the first successful Jesuit mission in 1583 until the disastrous failure of the British trade embassy in 1816, China's cultural practices transfixed the attention of Western philosophers, theologians, architects, artists, entrepreneurs, and social critics. The direct influences on European culture were many and profound, ranging from Chinese teahouses in European palace gardens to adaptations of Chinese plays for the popular stage, from calls for the restructuring of the civil service on the model of Chinese meritocracy to the espousal of Confucian precepts in the moral education of children.

More significant than even such readily visible gestures of imitation and appropriation, however, were the interpretive strategies that accompanied them: the processes by which Europeans translated the unfamiliar and often enigmatic artifacts of Chinese culture into familiar forms of meaning, thus engaging them in the emergent discourses of European modernity.

This book traces recurrent patterns in the European imaginative constructions of China through four illuminating spheres of encounter: linguistic, theological, aesthetic, and economic. How might we compare the perplexity of Europeans before the Chinese writing system with their experience of Chinese religious practice, trade policy, or porcelain design? Poems spanning four decades from Portland, Oregon poet and writer, David Porter. David began writing verse in high school, published his first poem Hitchhiking In Winter in the late 60s. He continued to write through years of raising four children and working on community projects as a way to earn a living. The poem Thoughts While Crossing The Steel Bridge was a runner-up in Oregon's Ben Hur Lampman poetry contest in the 1980s. With that and few other exceptions, this is his first offering from that body of work.

DAVID PORTER worked for decades as director of history museums and related institutions in Oregon. He always had a passion for stories of the past. He wrote stories and poems from the time he was a teenager and was first published in Portland Review when in college. That led him to work as a freelance writer and poet during the '70s. He is the author of Clearing The Sky Of Thickets a collection of poetry with a distinct Pacific Northwest voice. The Death of Will Dodican originated from a promise to his paternal grandmother that he would try to unravel the mystery of her uncle William Dodican's death far from home in the New Mexican desert in October 1905. The puzzle had tormented Will's sisters throughout their lives. Is there a clear answer to the question Who killed Will? Read Porter's diligent effort to sort through the available evidence as well as to understand the time and places through which the characters played out the sad story. The search led him to discoveries which he hadn't known about his family. Porter admires Erik Larson's style and scholarship in The Devil in the White City and other works. His intent is to bring a touch of that flavor to this first work of historic dramatization. Porter lives in the Portland area with his wife Mary and a cat named Tiger. He hopes that his children will be inspired to learn more about the people who came before them because of the book.
