John Henry Newman's writings in theology, apologetics, history, poetry, and educational theory, among other fields, made him one of the most controversial as well as influential modern Christian thinkers. Central to his religious vision was his innovative and complex mental philosophy, first sketched out at Oxford during his Anglican years and developed in its most detailed form in his celebrated Grammar of Assent. In The Mental Philosophy of John Henry Newman, Jay Newman (no relation) presents a careful scrutiny of John Henry Newman's phenomenology of belief and epistemology in the context of the nineteenth-century cleric's major work. He departs from traditional historical and technological approaches to Newman's work on belief and critically examines Newman's contribution in this area from the standpoint of contemporary analytical philosophy.
The study examines the sources, aims, and implications of Newman's philosophical project. While it draws attention to the positive value of Newman's original approach, it also explores the weaknesses and dangers of Newman's main phenomenological and epistemological theories. Jay Newman not only makes a significant original contribution to the field of Newman studies but also provides us with a guide to some of the problems and confusions of the Grammar of Assent. The subject of competition between religion and television has, if only indirectly, received considerable attention, particularly from religionists disturbed by the threat posed by television programming to traditional religious beliefs, values, and attitudes. This detailed study considers the competing cultural forces of television and religion from a wider and more theoretical perspective. Newman examines the major forms of competition and the various motives and strategies of the people and groups involved. His philosophical approach allows us to see that the most important aspect of competition between television and religion is their rivalry as cultural forces. In this rivalry, religion continues to have a profound influence on the shaping of television, just as it has always had on all newly developing forms of culture.
In this broad philosophical examination of the relationship between religion and the family, Jay Newman delves into issues concerning Biblical religion, culture, sociology, and family values. He maintains that recent media debates about the Bible and family values have obscured the complex relationship between the family and religion.
Focusing on how the family values that the Biblical literature imparts might be relevant--or irrelevant--to family problems and other cultural problems in a modern Western democracy, this study contributes to the understanding of basic cultural relations between religion and the family. After reflecting on the effects of much Biblical teaching on the family, the book proceeds to explore the cultural and existential significance of competition and cooperation between Biblical religion and the family. This series is four books, with each book resulting from the Daily Devotionals written for each Volume for Series covers a quarter of a year. I hope you enjoy this series and even more, I hope you find inspiration to live a life filled with the Love of Christ.
Some of the topics might seem controversial, but my intention is to share my sense of God's Love as it shared with me. My intentions are the simple fact that as Christians we already know that we cannot earn our way to heaven. If we could earn our way to heaven, there would have been no need for Christ to come to Earth and be sacrificed for our salvation. With that in mind, it should also be acknowledged that, if we cannot earn our way to heaven, we cannot facilitate the entrance into heaven for any other person by any means than simply sharing God's Love and encouraging them to accept Christ as their savior while, in turn, sharing God's Love with all they encounter as well.
Should you find this book and others in the series to be useful in your faith journey, feel free to contact me and let me know. How we discover Christ and invite him into our lives is not as important as the simple act of doing so. I encourage all people to really investigate the promise of Jesus and the peace and love he brings your life when you turn your life over to him. Grace, Peace, and Love to all! AMEN!
