On the surface, Brandon Willard seems like your average eight-year-old boy. He loves his mama, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and G. I. Joe. But Brandon's life is anything but typical.
Wise beyond his years, Brandon understands he's the only one in this world he can count on. It's an outlook that serves him well the day his mama leaves him behind at the Raleigh bus station and sets off to Canada with her destiny -- the latest man that she hopes will bring her happiness. The day his mother leaves, Brandon takes the first step toward shaping his own destiny. Soon he sends himself spending pleasant days playing with his cousins on his grandparents' farm and trying to forget the past. In the safety of that place, Brandon finally is able to trust the love of an adult to help iron out the wiry places until his nerves are as steady as any other boy's.
But when Sophie Willard shows up a year later with a determined look in her eye and a new man in tow, Brandon's grandparents ignore a judge's ruling and flee the state with Brandon. Creating a new life and identity in a small Florida town, Brandon meets the people who will fill him with self-worth and self-respect. He slowly becomes involved with God's Hospital, a church run by the gregarious Sister Delores, a woman who is committed to a life of service for all members of the community, black and white, regardless of some townsfolk's disapproval.

Written by a leading expert, this is the ideal guide to the only book Wittgenstein published during his lifetime, the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. Michael Morris makes sense of Wittgenstein's brief but often cryptic text, highlighting its key themes. He introduces and analyzes:
Wittgenstein is the most important twentieth-century philosopher in the English speaking world. This book will be essential reading for all students of philosophy of language and metaphysics.
Erma Lee is on the run . . . Running from an abusive husband . . . running from a mother who doesn't care -- never cared. Running from a soul-numbing factory job that has held her down her entire life ...
Erma Lee and her granddaughter, Cher, flee to the town of Wiregrass, Alabama, to escape the past and start over -- or so Erma Lee thinks. Erma Lee forms an unlikely friendship with Miss Claudia, an elderly socialite who is hiding a few details about her own past. Life in Wiregrass is different for Erma Lee and Cher, for here they find mercy and promise -- until, that is, the day Cher's convict father arrives in town, forcing all three women to come to terms with buried secrets.
Charmaine, Mike's wife of 43 years, lived with cancer for nearly 8 years until 5 years ago. Then Jesus came back for her as he had promised. He took her to be where He is in his Father's house where He had prepared a home for her. He lifted her up on Eagles' wings and took her to Himself. The cancer is now dead, but Charmaine lives.
This is Mike and Charmaine's story. it is a story of hope from the one left behind, a role that one day so many of us will be called upon to fill.
It tells of God's goodness and how he is even better than we think - all the time. This they discovered through their circumstances, not despite them.
Who was Natacha Rambova, the woman often referred to as Hollywood's most hated woman? As the despised wife of silent film heart-throb Rudolph Valentino, she never censored her hatred of Hollywood although she achieved renown there as an art director. Despite the success of her Art Deco set designs, her beguiling beauty and alleged control over Valentino was the subject of his fans' boisterous outrage. When Rambova left Valentino in 1925 to file for divorce, she was savaged by accusations that his death a few months later was her fault.
Natacha Rambova, the name carries with it visions of onion-domed citadels and faraway places, wrote her sole biographer, Michael Morris. Yet, Rambova's roots were far less exotic; she was born in Salt Lake City to a Mormon mother and an Irish Catholic father. As a bold young artist, bookish, rebellious and stunning, she was not destined for mediocrity. Her life story includes far more than her few years spent married to Valentino. Her refusal to bow to the social dictates of her day which remanded women to domestic servitude, ensured that her life Beyond Valentino was one of independence and scholarly success. She gave lectures and taught classes on universal symbolism, comparative religion and Near Eastern art. Rambova devoted the last twenty years of her life to Egyptology, a field to which her contributions are just now starting to be fully appreciated.
To date, the 1991 publication of Michael Morris' iconic, Madam Valentino stands as the definitive biographical work on Rambova. With co-author, Evelyn Zumaya, Morris recently compiled ancillary material he was not able to include in Madam Valentino to create, Beyond Valentino, The Madam Valentino Addendum. Although Michael Morris tragically passed away while working on this book, Ms. Zumaya took on the completion of his now posthumous work, his final tribute to Rambova.
Beyond Valentino includes over 250 color photographs, Rambova's unpublished writings, including her essay, Arriba Espa a and excerpts from her unpublished life's work, The Cosmic Circuit. The volume contains profiles of her contemporaries and intimate circle, creating an informed and colorfully illustrated glimpse into her later life. This 538-page compendium also includes the authoritative commentary and analysis of several renowned scholars, who through their expertise delve deeper into the fascinating life and times of Natacha Rambova.

This book participates in the modern recovery of the memory of the long-forgotten relationship between Scotland and the Caribbean. Drawing on theoretical paradigms of world literature and transnationalism, it argues that Caribbean slavery profoundly shaped Scotland's economic, social and cultural development, and draws out the implications for current debates on Scotland's national narratives of identity. Eighteenth- to nineteenth-century Scottish writers are re-examined in this new light. Morris explores the ways that discourses of improvement in both Scotland and the Caribbean are mediated by the modes of pastoral and georgic which struggle to explain and contain the labour conditions of agricultural labourers, both free and enslaved. The ambivalent relationship of Scottish writers, including Robert Burns, to questions around abolition allows fresh perspectives on the era. Furthermore, Morris considers the origins of a hybrid Scottish-Creole identity through two nineteenth-century figures - Robert Wedderburn and Mary Seacole. The final chapter moves forward to consider the implications for post-devolution (post-referendum) Scotland. Underpinning this investigation is the conviction that collective memory is a key feature which shapes behaviour and beliefs in the present; the recovery of the memory of slavery is performed here in the interests of social justice in the present.
