This is my story. My autobiographical account of my 50-year research career. It has also turned out to be a biography of the ink cap mushroom which is now called Coprinopsis cinerea, so to put my own research into some perspective I do make reference to the work of others; both before and after my own half-century contribution. However, as I say, this is my story so don't be surprised if my opinions dominate the line of argument I present. I have always been an experimentalist, and it seems to me that performing experiments on an organism and then interpreting their results is a close analogue of a ghost writer interviewing the subject of his/her biography, and then writing the text using the subject's own words and calling it an autobiography. Throughout this account I will be showing you the results of a great many of my experiments and interpreting them to show you what they mean and how they contributed to a developing story. In many respects I will be using my subject's own words to tell this story of a life. I'm just reporting what Coprinopsis has told me; that's my justification for calling this an autobiography.

This book presents a solutions based approach to reducing and removing CO2 from the atmosphere transforming it into solid (crystalline) CaCO3 through the ability of marine organisms such as molluscs, crustacea, corals, and coccolithophore algae. Life Science studies in space were initially driven by the need to explore how man could survive spaceflight conditions; the effects of being launched un- der high accelerations, exposed to weightlessness and radiation for different periods of time, and returned to Earth in safety. In order to substantiate the detailed knowledge of potentially adverse effects, many model experiments were launched using organisms which ranged from bacteria, plants, inverte- brates, rodents and primates through to man. Although no immediate life threatening effects were found, these experiments can be considered today as the precursors to life science research in space. Many unexplained effects on these life forms were attributed to the condition of weightlessness. Most of them were poorly recorded, poorly published, or left simply with anecdotal information. Only with the advent of Skylab, and later Spacelab, did the idea emerge, and indeed the infrastructure permit, weightlessness to be considered as an ex- tended tool for research into some fundamental mechanisms or processes as- sociated with the effect of gravity on organisms at all levels. The initial hy- pothesis to extrapolate from hypergravity through 1 x g to near 0 x g effects could no longer be retained, since many of the experiment results were seen to contradict the models or theories in the current textbooks of biology and physiology. The past decade has been dedicated primarily to exploratory research.
