The great Tamil poet Muruganar approached the South Indian sage, Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi, and requested elucidation on the instruction which had been given by Lord Siva to the Rishis of Darukavanam (the Pine Forest). The Rishis had become hooked on action (karma) and every attainment threw up the desire for a further bigger, better attainment. They approached Siva and asked for help. Things have not changed much since then ... have they? The human condition continues to be enthralled with the shadows all the while oblivious to the all important source of the light. Sri Ramana Maharshi agreed and wrote this instruction in 30 verses. Later, the verses were translated into Telugu, Malayalam and, at the request of the great Sanskritist, Kavyakantha Ganapati Muni, they were also translated into Sanskrit. The Sanskrit work is known as Upadesa Saram (The Essence of Instruction). This is an English translation of that work with commentary by Miles Wright.

The English verses are as they appear in the 1974 fourth edition of The Collected Works of Ramana Maharshi published by Sri Ramanasramam.

The verses and the commentary dispel the illusion of being a bodily form, reveal the unreality of the ego, and help find peace that is changeless, happiness that is perfectly full, and freedom without the least trace of bondage or limitation.

Earlier, SAT published an English translation with commentary of the Sanskrit version of the Forty Verses on Reality called Saddarsanam, and An Inquiry Into the Revelation of Truth and Oneself. The commentary was derived from transcripts of spiritual instruction imparted at the SAT Temple.

This present book is also derived from transcripts of the spiritual instruction expounded at the SAT Temple during retreats in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2017. Of the verses selected, some were composed by Sri Ramana, and some were composed by other sages, such as Adi Sankaracarya and Vasishtha.

Reading and meditating with this text will dispel the darkness and gloom of delusion and reveal the egoless real state.

Menschen aus allen L ndern, Bildungsschichten und Religionen kamen zu ihm. Er lehrte vorwiegend Selbstergr ndung (atma vichara) und kam mit vielen Standardwerken des Advaita Vedanta und des hinduistischen Schrifttums in Ber hrung, weil Devotees sie ihm brachten, damit er sie ihnen erkl ren m ge. Im Laufe seines Lebens schrieb er Gedichte und Prosa, meist aber nicht aus eigenem Antrieb, sondern weil seine Anh nger ihn darum baten oder als Antwort auf ihre Fragen. Zudem bersetzte er einige wichtige Advaita-Werke.

Ramana Maharshi wurde am 30. Dezember 1879 in Tiruchuli in der Nähe von Madurai (Tamil Nadu, Südindien) geboren. Nach einem Erleuchtungserlebnis im Alter von sechzehn änderte sich sein Leben schlagartig. Bald darauf ging er von Zuhause fort und lie sich am heiligen Berg Arunachala in Tiruvannamalai nieder. Schlie lich entstand der Ramanashram am Fu e des Berges, wohin viele Verehrer des Maharshi und Besucher für einen kurzen oder längeren Aufenthalt kamen. Er blieb dort bis zu seinem Tod am 14. April 1950. Die Gespräche mit Ramana Maharshi umfassen den Zeitraum 1935-1939 und wurden von Munagala S. Venkataramiah, einem seiner langjährigen Schüler aufgezeichnet. Während dieser vier Jahre hatte der Ramanashram seinen Höhepunkt erreicht. Der Maharshi war bei guter Gesundheit, und die Halle, in der er Tag und Nacht anzutreffen war, stand für alle offen. Die Besucher strömten aus allen Weltteilen herbei. Es gab kaum ein Land, das zur einen oder anderen Zeit nicht vertreten gewesen wäre. Munagala S. Venkataramiah übergab seine Mitschriften dem Ashram, und sie wurden als Talks with Ramana Maharshi veröffentlicht. Ein wesentlicher Teil bildet auch eine Auswahl der Legenden ber die ber hmten s dindischen Shiva-Heiligen aus dem Periya Puranam und Erz hlungen aus dem Yoga Vasishta. Das Buch wurde von Gabriele Ebert bersetzt und nach indischen Vorlagen illustriert.
