The Philosophy of Modern Song is Bob Dylan's first book of new writing since 2004's Chronicles: Volume One--and since winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016.

Dylan, who began working on the book in 2010, offers his extraordinary insight into the nature of popular music. He writes over sixty essays focusing on songs by other artists, spanning from Stephen Foster to Elvis Costello, and in between ranging from Hank Williams to Nina Simone. He analyzes what he calls the trap of easy rhymes, breaks down how the addition of a single syllable can diminish a song, and even explains how bluegrass relates to heavy metal. These essays are written in Dylan's unique prose. They are mysterious and mercurial, poignant and profound, and often laugh-out-loud funny. Spanning six decades, Retrospectrum showcases the development and range of Bob Dylan's (born 1941) visual art in an array of mediums. His diverse creations include works made in oil, acrylic, watercolor, ink, pastel, charcoal and sculpture in iron. Among the artworks presented in Retrospectrum are some of Dylan's earliest ink sketches, first published in 1973's Writings and Drawings, which illustrated and compiled Dylan's lyrics up to that date. Photographer Barry Feinstein took that photo, as well as many more of Dylan throughout his career. Inspired by a series of photographs that Feinstein took in Hollywood during the 1950s and 60s, Bob Dylan wrote an extraordinary series of poems that have remained unpublished for decades. They are thought-provoking, witty and erudite observations of the world; through the lens of Feinstein's photographs, they speak volumes about the anonymous faces and places of Los Angeles, and offer wry commentary on images of stars and legends in the neighbourhood at the time. Photos of Frank Sinatra, Marlene Dietrich, Judy Garland float through the book, as do poignant images of starlets, casting couches, employment agencies and palm tree'd boulevards. Numerous bootleg copies of this unclassifiable book circulated bohemian music scenes before its release in 1971. Tarántula combines poetry, prose, and exercises in the practice of automatic writing unsurprising given its Beat Generation context. The book shows Bob Dylan moving away from folk and towards rock, growing more transgressive at every step.
