The Dance of Death has appeared in many editions and forms over the centuries. This newly edited version includes 49 woodcuts based on paintings by Hans Holbein the Younger printed nearly four times the size in the original volume. The carver is believed to have been Hans L tzelburger or Hans of Luxemburg, made in the early 1500s. Many of the quatrains included in the book are attributed to Gilles Corrozet. These and the Bible verses have been translated to English. The book was originally published in 1533. The introductory text in the front matter was written by English poet Austin Dobson (1840 - 1921). The verses and images are stark reminders of mortality regardless of one's station in life.

This book has been considered important throughout the human history, and so that this work is never forgotten we have made efforts in its preservation by republishing this book in a modern format for present and future generations. This whole book has been reformatted, retyped and designed. These books are not made of scanned copies and hence the text is clear and readable.

Alice in Wonderland (Also known as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland) tells of a girl named Alice falling through a rabbit hole into a world of fantasy populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic and magical creatures. The story plays with logic. It is a wonderful example of literary nonsense. Come fall through the Rabbit Hole and immerse yourself in the Magical Land of Alice's imagination.

The Dance of Death: Danse Macabre by Hans Holbein. The Danse Macabre, also called the Dance of Death, is an artistic genre of allegory of the Late Middle Ages on the universality of death: no matter one's station in life, the Dance Macabre unites all. The Danse Macabre consists of the dead or a personification of death summoning representatives from all walks of life to dance along to the grave, typically with a pope, emperor, king, child, and laborer. They were produced as mementos mori, to remind people of the fragility of their lives and how vain were the glories of earthly life. Its origins are postulated from illustrated sermon texts; the earliest recorded visual scheme was a now-lost mural at Holy Innocents' Cemetery in Paris dating from 1424 to 1425.

Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Obscure Press are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Life, and its prolongation, is again the theme of the next book (also mentioned, by the way, in Walton) which I take up, though unhappily it has no inscription. It is a little old calf-clad copy of Lewis Cornaro's Sure and Certain Methods of attaining a Long and Healthful Life, 4th ed., 24mo, 1727; and was bought at the Bewick sale of February, 1884, as having once belonged to Robert Elliot Bewick, only son of the famous old Newcastle wood-engraver. As will be shown later, it is easy to be misled in these matters, but I cannot help believing that this volume, which looks as if it had been re-bound, is the one Thomas Bewick mentions in his Memoir as having been his companion in those speculative wanderings over the Town Moor or the Elswick Fields, when, as an apprentice, he planned his future la Franklin, and devised schemes for his conduct in life. In attaining Cornaro's tale of years he did not succeed; though he seems to have faithfully practised the periods of abstinence enjoined (but probably not observed) by another of the noble Venetian's professed admirers, Mr. Addison of the Spectator.

At the outset of this book, published in the first 'English Men of Letters' series in 1883, the poet and author Austin Dobson (1840-1921) declares his intention to restrict himself to giving a 'purely biographical' account of the life of the lawyer, novelist and dramatist Henry Fielding (1707-54). Fielding is probably best remembered today for his novels Joseph Andrews and The History of Tom Jones (1749), but in his own day he was famous not only for his writings in many different genres but also for his work as an innovatory Justice of the Peace in London. Dobson recounts Fielding's life from his schooldays at Eton to the production of his first play, and his subsequent careers as a writer, magistrate and controversialist, until his death in Portugal (where he had travelled in the hope that the climate would improve his health) in October 1754.
