Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English writer and social critic. Over his lifetime, he wrote 15 novels, 5 novellas, and hundreds of short stories, including Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, and A Christmas Carol. His many works touched on themes of child welfare, education, and justice. He is remembered as one of the most well-regarded novelists of the Victorian era. Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) was famed for his pen-and-ink drawings to which he added watercolor. A leading figure of the Golden Age of British book illustration, he was especially renowned for his fantasy illustrations.
The story of Oliver Twist - orphaned, and set upon by evil and adversity from his first breath - shocked readers when it was published. After running away from the workhouse and pompous beadle Mr Bumble, Oliver finds himself lured into a den of thieves peopled by vivid and memorable characters - the Artful Dodger, vicious burglar Bill Sikes, his dog Bull's Eye, and prostitute Nancy, all watched over by cunning master-thief Fagin. Combining elements of Gothic Romance, the Newgate Novel and popular melodrama, Dickens created an entirely new kind of fiction, scathing in its indictment of a cruel society, and pervaded by an unforgettable sense of threat and mystery.
This Penguin Classics edition of Oliver Twist is the first critical edition to faithfully reproduce the text as its earliest readers would have encountered it from its serialisation in Bentley's Miscellany, and includes an introduction by Philip Horne, a glossary of Victorian thieves' slang, a chronology of Dickens's life, a map of contemporary London and all of George Cruikshank's original illustrations.
For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Note: John Leech's illustrations were created as engravings which had to be colored by hand, or through wood cuts. Due to the desire to create an edition that is as faithful to the original as modern typesetting technology will allow, they were not mofidied or enhanced for this edition. Readers should be aware that Leech did not produce his illustrations using computers, as this method, which does in fact allow tremendous clarity, was not invented for more than a hundred years later. Furthermore, while this edition is in full color, not all of Leech's illustrations were in color. Many of them were in black and white. Only the ones that were in full color are, in this edition, in full color.

The Victorians knew that the end of the year is a precipice, a time of change and transition. They captured the essence of this season--the yearning for what is lost, the fear of the unknown, but also the hope for what is to come--in the fantastical storytelling tradition known as the midwinter's tale. And of all such tales, the most famous is A Christmas Carol.
In his new illustrated edition of A Christmas Carol, John A. Rice draws on the influence of Victorian Spiritualism and fin de siècle Symbolism to emphasize the deeper symbolism and spirituality of Dickens's novella. Through five absorbing full-page illustrations and a number of enchanting vignettes--married to an elegant typographic design--Rice reveals Scrooge's encounters with the spirits as a soul's journey from darkness to light.
This is a fresh presentation of a seemingly familiar classic, one that will inspire contemporary audiences to heed the lessons of the ghosts--just as Dickens intended--and be kind to each other this holiday season and all throughout the year.
