Hace revivir para nosotros su Provenza natal, al pueblo provenzal con su alma, su imaginaci n desbordante, sus espejismos, sus malicias, sus alegrias y sus penas.

C'est Daudet lui m me qui raconte: Le volume parut chez Hetzel en 1869, se vendit p niblement deux mille exemplaires, attendant comme les autres oeuvres de mes d buts, que la vogue des romans leur fit un regain de vente et de publicit . N'importe C'est encore l mon livre pr f r , non pas au point de vue litt raire, mais parce qu'il me rappelle les plus belles heures de ma jeunesse, rires fous, ivresses sans remords, des visages et des aspects amis que je ne reverrai plus jamais .

Un soir d'hiver, le patron de la p niche La Belle Nivernaise, trouve un gamin abandonn et l'emm ne bord. The first part was composed in that Southern France it describes so charmingly; its first chapters form one of the most touching of autobiographies. In the second part Daudet has to tell of the struggles of an idealistic young poet in the selfish, devouring whirlpool of Paris. The whole book seems to bear the impress of the circumstances under which it was written. It is full of the milk of human kindness. --- When Daudet wrote Le Petit Chose in his early manhood, he succeeded in producing one of the most delightfully idyllic of his works, one that will probably continue to be read as long as any of the more powerful novels of his prime. It is one of the most perfect representations in literature of childhood's hopes and fears and of youth's aspirations and defeats.
