A colossal expedition into the mind of Tim Burton through over 200 pieces of rare and unpublished behind-the-scenes materials
From Beetlejuice to Batman, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to Alice in Wonderland and beyond, Tim Burton has made an indelible mark on cinema across horror, drama and fantasy films with his uncanny, whimsical style. Since his youth, he has created a thematic repository of popular culture, comics, fairy tales, Old Hollywood films and more, the elements of which he intersperses into his movies.
The major, immersive exhibition at the Museo del Cinema in Turin, and its corresponding catalog, honors Burton's unique vision and artistic output. Divided into nine thematic sections, the catalog features over 200 examples of rarely or never-before-seen original artworks spanning Burton's entire lifetime: including early sketches from his childhood, paintings, drawings, photographs, concept art, storyboards, costumes, moving-image works, maquettes, puppets and life-size sculptural installations. This archival material honors Burton's signature style but also reveals his appreciation of the work of previous generations, including the drawings of Edward Gorey and Charles Addams, the horror films of Vincent Price and Japanese monster movies. The World of Tim Burton creates an autobiography told through his creative process, tracing the singular visual imagination of a multidimensional postmodern artist.
Tim Burton (born 1958) grew up in Burbank, California and studied animation at the California Institute of the Arts. Fired from Disney after making Frankenweenie, Burton was approached by Paul Reubens to direct Pee-wee's Big Adventure, which became his first major hit. Since then he has directed dozens of blockbuster movies and has become recognizable for his signature style. Recently he directed and produced the TV series Wednesday, the second-most watched show on Netflix.
The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy is a collection of charmingly weird tales conjured from the unique imagination of acclaimed filmmaker Tim Burton--a great gift idea for fans of the acclaimed filmmaker.
From breathtaking stop-action animation to bittersweet modern fairy tales, filmmaker Tim Burton has become known for his unique visual brilliance--witty and macabre at once. Now, he gives birth to a cast of gruesomely sympathetic children--misunderstood outcasts who struggle to find love and belonging in their cruel, cruel worlds. His lovingly lurid illustrations evoke both the sweetness and tragedy of these dark yet simple beings--hopeless, hapless heroes who appeal to the ugly outsider in all of us, and let us laugh at a world we have long left behind (mostly, anyway).
An expansive exploration of the role of design and creative practice in director Tim Burton's unique approach to building worlds
This book is the official catalog for the exhibition at the Design Museum, as well as the first publication to explore the relationship between Tim Burton's artistic creations and the world of design. The reader is invited into an examination of what is now broadly referred to as the Burtonesque, exploring his iconic style and the impact his unique design aesthetic has on broader visual culture. The book unpacks Burton's distinctive visual language, exploring the intersection of gothic, carnivalesque and fantastical elements that define his cinematic masterpieces. Insightful essays by design experts and film critics, interspersed with images featured in the exhibition, will offer a deeper understanding of the director's creative process, making this catalog an homage to the role that design practice plays in the hauntingly beautiful worlds he creates.

The evolution of the iconic filmmaker's creative practice, from childhood sketches to his mature oeuvre
Tim Burton has reinvented Hollywood genre filmmaking over the past three decades. With a visual style inspired by the aesthetics of animation and silent comedy, Burton's work melds the exotic, the horrific and the comic, manipulating expressionism and fantasy with the skill of a graphic novelist. Published to accompany a major career retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art, this affordable volume considers Burton's career as an artist and filmmaker. It narrates the evolution of his creative practices, following the current of his visual imagination from his earliest childhood drawings through his mature oeuvre. Illustrated with works on paper, moving-image stills, drawn and painted concept art, puppets and maquettes, storyboards and examples of his work as a graphic artist for his non-film projects, this volume sheds new light on Burton and presents previously unseen works from the artist's personal archive. Still only in his thirties, Tim Burton has established himself in the past fifteen years as one of the great visionaries of film. With the Batman films, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Ed Wood, and, most recently, Sleepy Hollow, he has continually broken new ground both visually and thematically, exploring the dark anguish--as well as the dark humor--that animates many of his characters while also creating a densely textured, sometimes bizarre look specific to each film. In Burton on Burton, Burton talks to Mark Salisbury about his training as an animator at Disney, the importance of design in his films, and the recurring themes present in his work. In this revised edition, he also discusses the influence of 1950s sci-fi and 1970s disaster films on Mars Attacks as well as how he conceived his highly stylized approach to the content and setting of Sleepy Hollow, his acclaimed retelling of the Washington Irving story that stars Johnny Depp, perhaps the actor most identified with Burton's work. Enhanced by stills from the films, storyboards, and illustrations of set designs for all his major films, Burton on Burton provides insights and information about the man and his work, throwing light on both his unique artistic vision and on the extraordinary films that have been the result.Robina Oliphant's wishes have never been considered by others, so she isn't surprised when her father marries her off to the ruthless clan Gunn in order to secure a political alliance.
