Once in Golconda is a dramatic chronicle of the breathtaking rise, devastating fall, and painstaking rebirth of Wall Street in the years between the wars. Focusing on the lives and fortunes of some of the era's most memorable traders, bankers, boosters, and frauds, John Brooks brings to vivid life all the ruthlessness, greed, and reckless euphoria of the '20s bull market, the desperation of the days leading up to the crash of '29, and the bitterness of the years that followed.
It's all there in Once in Golconda-the avarice of an era that favored the rich; and the later anguish of myriads of speculators doomed by a bloated market, easy credit, and their own cupidity and stupidity.
This new book reviews critically recent studies of fire control, and describes the essentials of naval gunnery in the dreadnought era.
With a foreword by Professor Andrew Lambert, it shows how, in 1913, the Admiralty rejected Arthur Pollen's Argo system for the Dreyer fire control tables. Many naval historians now believe that, consequently, British dreadnoughts were fitted with a system that, despite being partly plagiarised from Pollen's, was inferior: and that the Dreyer Tables were a contributory cause in the sinking of Indefatigable and Queen Mary at Jutland.
This book provides new and revisionist accounts of the Dreyer/Pollen controversy, and of gunnery at Jutland. In fire control, as with other technologies, the Royal Navy had been open, though not uncritically, to innovations. The Dreyer Tables were better suited to action conditions (particularly those at Jutland). Beatty's losses were the result mainly of deficient tactics and training: and his battlecruisers would have been even more disadvantaged had they been equipped by Argo. It follows the development of the Pollen and Dreyer systems, refutes the charges of plagiarism and explains Argo's rejection. It outlines the German fire control system: and uses contemporary sources in a critical reassessment of Beatty's tactics throughout the Battle of Jutland.
The works of African American authors and artists are too often interpreted through the lens of authenticity. They are scrutinized for positive or negative representations of Black people and Black culture or are assumed to communicate some truth about Black identity or the Black experience. However, many contemporary Black artists are creating works that cannot be slotted into such categories. Their art resists interpretation in terms of conventional racial discourse; instead, they embrace opacity, uncertainty, and illegibility.
John Brooks examines a range of abstractionist, experimental, and genre-defying works by Black writers and artists that challenge how audiences perceive and imagine race. He argues that literature and visual art that exceed the confines of familiar conceptions of Black identity can upend received ideas about race and difference. Considering photography by Roy DeCarava, installation art by Kara Walker, novels by Percival Everett and Paul Beatty, drama by Suzan-Lori Parks, and poetry by Robin Coste Lewis, Brooks pinpoints a shared aesthetic sensibility. In their works, the devices that typically make race feel familiar are instead used to estrange cultural assumptions about race. Brooks contends that when artists confound expectations about racial representation, the resulting disorientation reveals the incoherence of racial ideologies. By showing how contemporary literature and art ask audiences to question what they think they know about race, The Racial Unfamiliar offers a new way to understand African American cultural production.Synopsis: 'Garrtellia'.
Above all else, 'Garrtellia' is a romantic adventure story including the endless twists and turns of life, the battles, loves, happiness, confusion and sorrow.
The story begins in a corner of the country once known as France. There, the future looks bleak for the meagre amount of Earth's survivors after the 'Big Death' and endless global disasters. Without any borders remaining, there are now only tribes and families trying to stay alive.
The remaining people have established themselves again as hunters, gatherers, warriors and plunders. They are fierce warriors and survivors, ready to defend and kill whenever necessary but many are not happy with that situation.
Garr, a young warrior, together with her brother, were once angry young people. But fate allows Garr to meet a wise older man, Knap, who guides her into maturity, after which, Garr's life is changed forever.
As a bright and charismatic woman, she assembles around her a similarly-minded family and group of supporters with the aim of turning their wild environment into a caring and efficient kingdom.
She becomes the partner of a young woman, then a nomadic tribal leader, and ultimately together, they work to change and improve their futures. The stunning part one of the trilogy, 'The First Rays of Sun' begins to follow Garr in this new world order where the rules of society are being rewritten.
The story takes Garr, her partners, and her family forward from that world of base survival, hunger and brutality, into the growth and development of a functioning kingdom, 'Garrtellia'.
Each generation follows Garr and attempts to hold true to her initial vision. The story contains heartbreak and death, together with love, as those who follow Garr's spirit are forced to face the many decisions of leadership involved with growing a kingdom. The endeavours continue in the second and third parts of the trilogy; 'The Second Dawning' and 'Innocent Reflections'. As a story combining mind and spirit, it follows the journey taken by most societies and peoples throughout history in many ways. All be it, a gripping fantasy of good intent and realisation, it is most definitely an adventure.

The end resulting science in this story is a projection of oncoming possibilities, all be, within the story, the lead-up science is sound and researched. We live in a world where land, sea and air temperatures are rising, causing slow chemical changes, hence environmental problems are spreading into every part of our existence. Across species infection appears to be on the increase, with the slowly rising sea levels, more acidic oceans, and dangerous algal blooms, all occurring more regularly, hence, the future is undoubtedly, more threatening.
Synopsis for, 'Incidents of Slavery'.
In a dramatic and wide mix of characters, the story wanders across continents, from green luxurious jungles to the dark underworld of big cities. It pulls together the vile actions and disasters that still remain a curse in our world. But where evil lurks, so does love. Redemption and forgiveness together with the ill results of justice find their way into every corner of the characters' lives and ultimately a kind of fairness becomes the result of those interactions. Possibly, love and fairness win the day but sadly the battle for a harmonious future for so many souls remains the endeavour we should all pursue.
I hope you enjoy the journey.
